Living with ‘Style’ in Christchurch

I hadn’t realised the importance of the wise old saying “Choose your battles” until I had children. My children have always been fairly strong willed and attempting to win a battle over them eating fancy mixed lettuce leaves (when they were young) was only going to make them focus all their energy, troops, reinforcements, munitions and time into that one resistance; whilst my military forces were weak and scattered from a long list of things to get done and general fatigue. They won that one! Angela Bennett, Editor The saying ‘choose your battles’, or ‘pick your battles’ appears to be attributed to the brilliant Chinese military strategist, Sun Tzu. He was a legend on the battlefield and (it’s widely accepted) author of The Art of War written over 2000 years ago. His strategy has been proven many times in history. When a country tries to fight a war on two or more fronts it often struggles to secure them – most of the time it’s important to deal with one issue at a time and let the others slide. Being stretched too thinly is not a good position to be in on any of life’s ‘fronts’. With that oft heard saying so well entrenched as a metaphor of life where we compete or battle for all sorts of things from university places to jobs, market share for our businesses, houses, life partners, places on sports teams, popularity, respect, love… I was intrigued to hear of modern day experiments on how humans choose their battles. Professor Nick Chater revealed in The Human Zoo on BBC radio recently that actually “when it comes to choosing, we aren’t very good at it.” He said there are many experiments where people are given an easy or difficult task; typically it is general knowledge questions. When given the easy task they think they have done well, but when given the hard task they think they have done badly. But in comparison to others they might have done well. So it seems people typically choose the easy task as the one they want to be measured on. The problem with this is that you don’t know how you compare to others. “What you really need to do,” says Professor Chater, “is compare yourself to other people.” Experiments in which people were tested and given a known disadvantage proved that people who were weaker discovered they had to specialise or concentrate their efforts in one area. “We can see this played out in life,” the professor said. “A younger sibling may feel it is hopeless to compete with an older sibling’s academic successes and decide to concentrate on sport or music. A danger we always face is choosing to compete on things that ‘feel’ easy, but of course many other people will fall into this trap too! So the apparently easy options (for example, becoming a successful novelist rather than a successful quantum physicist) may turn out to be the most crowded: what appears the easy route, in fact turns out to be the hard option.” It seems we not only have to think about what battles we can win, but where the outcome of that winning or losing will take us.

Think about it… Choose your battles wisely. After all, life isn't measured by how many times you stood up to fight. It's not winning battles that makes you happy, but it's how many times you turned away and chose to look into a better direction. Life is too short to spend it on warring. Fight only the most, most, most important ones, let the rest go. - C Joybell C

The Lapelles

T

he Lapelles is the music of Brad Banks and Camila Leal Rossi. This Christchurch based duo, established in 2013, have become known for their signature indie/folk sound which is both unique and captivating. Recently The Lapelles released their debut single, Consolation Road, in the lead up to the release of their EP later this year – have a listen at https://soundcloud.com/thelapelles/c onsolation-road. Brad, who some will remember as guitarist in the popular and multi-award winning band Dukes, has worked with artists such as Dave Dobbyn, INXS, Pretenders and Blondie. I caught up with Brad and Camila to discover a little more about their latest album and what’s coming up in their music endeavours… How old were you when you discovered your love of singing/music? Brad: I started playing guitar after discovering one in a wardrobe at home when I was 9. My brother had given up and my parents asked if I wanted lessons. I agreed to at the time just to please them, but after one lesson I was hooked. I learnt how to play the Drunken Sailor that day and have used those two chords – E minor and D - almost every day ever since. Camila: I have always loved music; it has been an important part of my life in one way or another for as long as I can remember. Did you ever dream then, of making music a career choice? Brad: Half way through 6th form (Year 12) I knew I wanted to do music as a career. I didn’t think my parents would buy it though, so I had to trick them into letting me study Music by telling them I wanted to be a Music Teacher. I went to the Nelson School of Music instead of Year 13, then to Jazz School here in Christchurch and then on to Teachers College. After five long years of study I think the joke was well and truly on me - but I did get my way and have been Teaching and performing ever since.

Camila: A lot of amazing artists; The Paper Kites, Ben Howard, Passenger - just to name a few. I’m inspired by artists who aren't afraid to do their own thing.

Camila: I’ve always had the dream of being onstage and I hope I never lose that; but I never realised that I could actually do it, until I finished high school and found myself doing it! Music is more a way of life than a career choice for me; I just have to do it. Who has inspired you in your musical career? Brad: There are so many bands and musicians that I love, both new and old. Currently I’m into the new young Nashville artists that are emerging. I’ve been lucky enough to support Dave Dobbyn over the years in Dukes, and have spent countless gigs watching him play side of stage. I love the way he weaves melodies into every aspect of his music. He’s a killer guitar player. Other NZ musicians I really admire are Gwyn Renolds who teaches at Jazz School, Godfrey Degrut - an amazing producer and writer, brothers Jo and Matt Barus – both so musical, LA Mitchell. I’ve just started playing with Ben Eldridge, a guitarist who I’ve admired for years. He plays some guitar in our first single Consolation Road too. We have a side jazz duo going.

What is the inspiration behind your debut single and the upcoming EP? Brad: A lot of the songs I write are stories about outcasts. I remember writing Consolation Road really quickly. I had an image of a cowboy version of the prodigal son – a dejected Christchurch cowboy (are there cowboys in Christchurch?!), coming home after years away to try patch things up and start his life where he left off, only to find everyone has moved on… the EP follows that theme with a couple of sappy love songs for good measure. Camila: It sounds totally cliché but honestly ‘life’. Each song has a story, a message, every time we write music it’s a way for us to communicate something. You write because you have something to share. It’s cathartic. What have you enjoyed most about the creative and recording processes? Brad: Musically, for a long time I had been focused on Dukes, which has been an amazing experience, but it did push my songwriting aside. I’m loving working with Camila who’s a breath of fresh air and taking a new approach to writing and recording. I have a home studio so most of our recordings get done there with some help from a friend Rob Payne who also has a studio. It’s great as we get to take our time with the creative process and aren’t pressured by expensive studios to get things done quickly. Camila: We have had full reigns on this project. So each and every part you hear on this album has been decided by us. It was amazing to hear the songs develop from our live sound to the fuller sound we had envisioned. It has been great to create something which is totally true to where we are with our music right now.

Stay with us during your earthquake repairs Treat it as a holiday you know you deserve it, in our fully serviced apartments.

What has the feedback on your single been like? Great! It’s a funny song to put out as a single in some ways as it’s so stripped back and doesn’t really carry the verse/chorus format – it’s just three verses. We liked the idea of doing something really simple. We filmed a video clip for it here in Christchurch which was a lot of fun. Nothing quite like filming a video on a freezing Christchurch winter’s day! What other creative endeavours do you enjoy? Brad: I love the creative endeavor of how I’ll next try to get the trout on the end of my fishing lure when nothing else is working. It turns out that fish are much smarter than me. Camila: I’m currently studying at the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts, doing a musical theater degree, so dancing, singing and acting are a huge part of my everyday life. I love ballet; I’ve been dancing since I was 5. For me dancing is like making music, I couldn’t live without it. What were you doing the last time the thought went through your mind, ‘I shouldn’t be doing this’? Brad: Amanda, my wife, and I have a new baby girl - that would be up there for sure! I think I’m totally out of my depth - the day Maisie came home from hospital with Amanda, I pretended like I had it all figured out so that I didn’t freak out. I still don’t really have any idea what I’m doing, but she’s so much fun and we’re loving it. I’m now an expert nappy technician. Camila: I had a bungee cord wrapped around my ankles and thought “Am I really about to willingly jump off a bridge?” But I’m so glad I did it! What is one thing that Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? Brad: I’m obsessed with apricots. Camila: English is my second language! I’m South American, I moved here from Uruguay when I was 12, so I’ve only been around NZ for 8 years.

Three new buildings in three months

H

alfway through Rangi Ruru’s 125th Anniversary Year it has already been a significant year for achievements. Principal Julie Moor explains the school has commenced work on their fourth new building for Music and Theatre Arts, after three new buildings have been opened in the last three months. The Gibson Centre (Information Technology and Library) and Science Centre were opened in early April by Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority head, Roger Sutton, and Mana Wāhine (Student Services and Social Sciences) was opened late last month by Sir Tipene O’Regan. Julie Moor, says while the school reflects on the rich 125 year old history, Rangi Ruru is also implementing a plan to ensure they have the best educational environment for girls for the next 100 years. “This development is an important milestone not only for Christchurch but for girls’ education,” she says. “These are quite simply exceptional buildings which have been designed specifically for girls. Rangi Ruru is a progressive school in both the learning environment and the pastoral care we provide. As the city continues to rebuild, we are proud of what we have all achieved in a relatively short period of time, with the concept plans for the “Project Blue Sky” campus redevelopment having first been announced publicly in July 2012.”

Luxe Aro-Ha Wellness Retreat

I

Craig Brown, a director of Melbourne based McIldowie Partners Architects who are the project architects for the campus design and development, agrees, adding that the Science Centre is “kind of like a living, breathing giant science experiment”. “It’s a living building that actively engages the students by being the very latest, environmentally responsive building, using natural ventilation for both heating and cooling (which might indeed be the only one of its kind in New Zealand), together with things like displays of how systems work, green walls and weather stations. The masterplan has focused on the Rangi Ruru campus being an evolving, vibrant learning environment for girls,” he says.

T

he University of Canterbury’s new student hub has won its category in the 2014 New Zealand Interior Awards. The University’s Undercroft student area in the James Hight building was a large bike shed before the earthquakes but the refit of the area has seen the Undercroft become a social centre for students with a food court, selection of cafes and retail outlets, as well as areas to relax in.

The project, designed by Warren and Mahoney, converted a mostly forgotten and under-used brutalist basement to a vibrant student area. Judges said the fact this was achieved under intense time and seismic pressures speaks not just of design integrity, but of collaboration between many communities for the purpose of creating a welcoming shelter for students.

– a Court Theatre gem

R

unning until 2 August, Blood Brothers is a musical you must not miss! With music and lyrics created by Willy Russell, it is based loosely on the 1844 novella The Corsican Brothers by Alexandre Dumas. The story is a contemporary nature and nurture plot, revolving around fraternal twins who were separated at birth. The twin’s different backgrounds take them to opposite ends of the social spectrum; one becoming a councillor and the other unemployed. They both fall in love with the same girl, causing a tear in their friendship and leading to the tragic death of both brothers. Originally developed as a school play, Blood Brothers debuted in Liverpool before Russell transferred it to West End for a short run in 1983. The musical won

the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical and went on to a year-long national tour before returning for a revival in the West End in 1988 where it stayed at the Noël Coward Theatre for three years. After transferring to the Phoenix Theatre in 1991, Blood Brothers spent more than 24 years in the West End, and played more than 10,000 performances, becoming the third longest-running musical production in West End history. The musical has been produced with success on tour, on Broadway and elsewhere, and it has developed a cult following. Blood Brothers at The Court is a world-class production with an outstanding cast. It will have you riveted to every on-stage nuance and amaze you with the outstanding performances. It may be a good idea to keep a hanky handy.

School of rock

ecause of his dedication to – and his love for – teaching children to play musical instruments, Nolan Hungerford is a difficult man to pin down for an interview.

Teaching, with the help of a handful of tutors, at five schools around Christchurch – one as far away as Pegasus – as well as giving private lessons, arranging public performances for youngsters and their participation in competitions like the Rock Quest is certainly a timeconsuming task that keeps him busy seven days a week. I managed to track Nolan down one recent Tuesday evening at the Headless Mexican restaurant at Sumner, where some children were getting their first opportunity to perform in front of an audience, usually playing guitar or drums, or singing. Of course, much of the audience was made up of families supporting their children, many of whom were not yet in their early teens. The place was continually busy with the movement of the children getting on and off stage and performing under the supervision or accompaniment of Nolan. Managing to get away from the stage for a short period while one of the tutors took over, Nolan told me that the number of children performing at the restaurant changed from week to week, ranging from one to 30. “Kids turn up, play a couple of songs, get the buzz, and come back again next week,” says Nolan. “We teach many musical instruments but kids need a place to play in front of an audience if they ever want to become public performers. “It all started with one student who was learning to sing and play the guitar. I was becoming frustrated because she wouldn't learn her songs. “I thought, let her play in different cafes and bars around Sumner.

We went to six or seven places in one evening. In the first place, she was terrible. At the last place, she sounded awesome.” It is out of this that the Christchurch School of Rock developed, with the help of tutors specialising in different instruments. By now, you have probably seen Nolan's colourful van with “School of Rock” written on the sides in the streets of Christchurch. “I started teaching two weeks after I learnt to play the saxophone, when I was 12. Soon, I was teaching saxophone, trumpet, trombone and clarinet. In third form, at the age of 13, my music teacher arranged for me to teach a symphonic band.” At present, Nolan has been involved with bands competing in the Smokefreerockquest, with the Canterbury final held at the Aurora Centre, Burnside High School, on June 13. The winners will go into the national final.

With a buoyant residential property market throughout the summer months, this quarter of 2014 has remained a strong seller’s market. Experience the Antarctic without leaving Chch

A

ntarctica is the Earth's southernmost continent, 14 million square kilometres of it containing the geographic South Pole, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It is wild and cruel, yet beautiful and enigmatic; the focus of some of the extremes of human endeavour and bravery, and surprisingly rich in life forms which have adapted to a forbidding environment. For most of us here, the connection with this continent is a distant and fanciful one, and this is where the International Antarctic Centre comes into its own. There, as it states in one of its brochures, “you can have an authentic Antarctic experience without leaving Christchurch.” Established in 1992, the Centre is located in the heart of a working Antarctic campus close to Christchurch International Airport. It is from here that many Antarctic missions are organised, and the Centre is one of Christchurch’s core tourist attractions. It is good to see that the Centre continues to evolve. As Manager Nicki Dawson explains, a lot of money has gone recently into improving effects – from a more alluring and almost mystical entryway, to the creation of effects that echo real life experiences. For example, soon you will be able to enjoy learning about

flying to Antarctica while seated in a replica format – it all enhances the learning impact. The Antarctic Gallery covers a range of topics from modern day Antarctica from treaty partners and conservation, wildlife and sea life, geological history, through to a little about daily life at Scott Base. You will be able to understand how scientists and visitors live there, how they eat and what they wear. Try to time your visit for the feeding of the little blue penguins (10.30am and 3.30pm) in a specially designed habitat. You can watch from surface or underwater level and learn more about these birds, the world’s smallest penguin. Many initially rescued and cared for by Napier Marineland they are able to live out their remaining years in safety. If you are keen enough, you can experience the effects of an Antarctic storm. This area was opened in 2003 by Sir Edmund Hillary, who explained that, with the wind chill factor getting down to minus 35 degrees; it was very close to the real thing. Don’t worry, jackets and overshoes are provided! Then there is a stimulating 4D movie experience – a ride in a ship complete with ice floe collisions, drifting snow flakes and curious wildlife. As well as Ice Voyage there is Happy Feet 4D. Don’t miss the Hagglund ride either. It's not for the fainthearted, but the course is uniquely designed to put the Hagglund through its paces in a safe environment.

Take your time over your visit, or you will suffer from sensory overload. Relax, enjoy food from the cafeteria, and browse through the shop. With holidays looming in July, the Centre will have its favourite characters out, such as Pom Pom Penguin, Husky Max and Sammy Seal, and a special deal means two children get in free with one full paying adult, who is a Canterbury resident.

The city’s pulse captured in two successful local magazines

National Awards won again by local magazine

our story

M

etropol was founded in 1998 by Trevor Laplanche who recognised that, in a city heavy with competitive media, there was no print media providing in-depth coverage of the city's 'pulse' in terms of our unique lifestyle and the visionary people who tirelessly contribute to it. Above: President of the NZCNA John Spring presents Trevor Laplanche, publisher of Metropol and Canterbury Rebuild magazines, the Winner’s Trophy and Certificates for Runner Up achievements.

Metropol has yet again achieved high honours at the NZCNA Annual Newspaper Awards at the recent Awards Dinner in Wellington. Trevor Laplanche gave credit to his team of passionate staff who “once again have produced a consistently high quality local magazine for the Christchurch reader.” “We are competing nationally against some very renowned publications at these awards, and being reviewed by peers in the industry and judged winners is a great accomplishment for our dedicated Christchurch team. Cantabrians can be assured they are getting the best product available in the market today; produced by a team of their own.”

16 July, 10 2014 Metropol

His aim was to celebrate Christchurch and Cantabrians, from the innovative hospitality industry to the creative designers in all fields; the savvy business owners and the movers and shakers who have helped make Christchurch standout as a great, little city on the world stage. Today Metropol, with a circulation of 33,300, is a national multiaward winning magazine, published fortnightly. Metropol's readers continue to discover the latest news about what's happening locally in the lifestyle scene. From the latest news on bars, businesses and boutiques opening, or reopening following earthquake repairs, to profiles on the who's who around town, there are topics of interest for a wide audience. Readers rely on Metropol for in-depth news on upmarket shopping, fashion trends from New Zealand and international designers, the latest on health and beauty trends, bridal news covering all aspects of weddings, top spots for foodies, local artisans, fine wines, architectural news, stylish home décor advice and new homeware on offer, as well as road tests and the latest launches of the most sought after vehicles.

In essence Metropol is quintessential Christchurch. Following the earthquakes Trevor Laplanche again recognised an unmet demand from Cantabrians who wanted to learn more about EQC, EQR, insurance and repairing and rebuilding their homes. Canterbury Rebuild magazine was launched in September 2012. Since then it has evolved rapidly to meet the current needs of readers throughout all areas of the city. It covers diverse topics from land information through to insurance, the build industry, engineers' perspectives, architects' recommendations, structural materials, product suppliers, innovations and new technology in building. Canterbury Rebuild has become a valued resource for Cantabrians moving through the repair and rebuild stages, and an authority for those seeking answers to specific concerns requiring professional clarification. The magazine has doubled in size due to support from advertisers and strong readership, and within a year the circulation has grown to 28,100 – twice that of the nearest competitor. Like Metropol, the Canterbury Rebuild website has a fully downloadable e-mag with live links for direct online contacts which offer further information about advertisers or specific articles. This makes both Metropol and Canterbury Rebuild available to everyone, anywhere, who wish to discover more about our great little city. Go to www.metropol.co.nz and www.canterburyrebuild.com

Best of both worlds…

low commission, top service

hey say the best things in life are free, but then they also say we have the right to freedom of choice. So when it comes to selling one of your biggest assets – your home – which commission structure will you choose to get the best outcome? Debra Hakaraia is making it a much easier question for Christchurch homeowners to answer. By adding top service to the 1% real estate market, Debra can quite literally give you the best of both worlds when it comes to marketing and selling your home. “During many years of experience in the real estate market, I recognised New Zealanders wanted lower commission rates, but they didn’t want to compromise on service,” Debra says. “And why should they? By utilising smart real estate techniques and innovative marketing we are able to market and sell your property, while leaving more money in your bank account at the end of the sales process.” Established six months ago by Debra, the aptly named Smart Real Estate utilises a mobile business model with low overheads and new marketing technology, or simply the same results for a significantly lower rate. With years of experience working for both 1% and 3.95% firms in New Zealand and

The owners of this stunning property recognised the benefits of listing with Smart Real Estate. A winning combination which is hard to find, the highly sought after Scarborough location captures all day sun, with breath-taking views of the Port Hills, Southern Alps, and Our Mighty Pacific Ocean stretching along Pegasus Bay to the Kaikouras. Contemporary design and superb flow are paramount throughout the deceptively spacious 200m2 footprint. The great floor plan offers you a variety of options to accommodate family or guests. The home’s generous dimensions are complemented by the 646m2 established level grounds. An ideal setting for professionals or families, all EQC work has been completed meaning this hot property is ready for you to walk in and start enjoying the fabulous location. The best part of this property is the fact that it is available. Don’t miss the opportunity to be the lucky new owner. This property will be sold on or before auction day, so get in to view on Saturday and Sunday 2-2:45pm, 44 Taylors Mistake Road, Scarborough. Auction on-site 11am, 2 August 2014. To discuss your real estate needs with Debra, to enquire about a role with Smart Real Estate, or discuss this property phone 0275 620 420 or 03 384 8600, or visit www.smartrealestate.co.nz.

Debra Hakaraia Australia, Debra recognised many 1% agencies cut down on training to make the lower commission structure work for them. Instead Debra believes in maintaining and even increasing training levels to ensure she retains the same high quality sales and marketing package offered by more expensive firms. She’s now on the lookout for another sales star to add to the team and she will be offering full training to the right person. “Canterbury has been through a rough few years,” she says. “By offering a 1%* real estate option which maintains the high quality marketing service the 3.95% market boasts, it benefits everyone.” *fees apply

Marg says she has really enjoyed the relationships built assisting clients through the legal challenges at different stages of their life journey, with her work including property, separation and relationship property and elder law matters. The firm is providing all of the same services as previously, including conveyancing (the buying and selling of houses and businesses) as well as estate planning including wills and trusts, subdivisions, and family law including relationship property.

Working with people and the challenge of solving problems for them, is what draws both Tim and Ari into the business, with both keen to provide the same welcoming and accessible service clients have always enjoyed. For Ari a move into the property and commercial team has led his career at Cameron and Company. Graduating from University of Canterbury, he joined the firm in 2004. For clients who seek advice on areas outside of their own specialities, such as employment disputes, criminal matters or civil litigation, they are able to offer the services of other lawyers within the company. The Fendalton office, located at 245 Clyde Road opposite Fendalton Village Mall, is the fourth branch of Cameron and Company – an addition to their head office at Leslie Hills Drive in Riccarton, as well as established branch offices in Barrington and Upper Riccarton.

Superheroes on a mission at Chch hospital Was it a bird? Was it a plane? No, it was Batman and Spiderman scaling the walls of Christchurch Hospital ahead of a top secret mission!

T

he international superheroes snuck into the quake hit city recently after answering a Code Red call from Christchurch’s superhero Flatman. A video of the mission has just been released (now that the superheroes are a safe distance from the city). “Canterbury still needs love – and who better to provide it than the world’s best known superheroes?” says Flatman. Flatman, Batman and Spiderman were joined by Iron Man, Mr Incredible, Captain America, Superwoman and the Black Widow in their mission. After abseiling down the side of the hospital, they swarmed five wards surprising the children and families inside. “There are so many people – like these families – in Christchurch who’re going through some really tough times. Our mission was to show how little things can bring joy to people, even when they’re in really stressful situations,” says Flatman. The mission was a hit. Free superhero cupcakes for all (courtesy of The Cupcake Collection), sword fights, bubbles and a whole lot of smiles. The All Right? project (which works to support and improve Cantabrians’ mental health and wellbeing as we recover and rebuild) helped accommodate the superheroes while they were in Christchurch and filmed the mission as part of its Outrageous Burst of All Right series. Manager Sue Turner is delighted with how the mission went. “It really shows how little things can mean a lot to people – even when times are tough for them. We know we can’t solve the myriad of complex issues Cantabrians are facing but we can all do things to brighten their days,” says Sue Turner. Sadly, Sue Turner says the superheroes were unable to rebuild the central city while they were here. They had a good look around though and are sure to be back when the need strikes.

Putting the fans into Fanfare The SCAPE Public Art Trust of Christchurch launched a fundraising initiative at Mashina in The Christchurch Casino to meet the final cost of installing a spectacular Neil Dawson sculpture, Fanfare, at the city’s gateway beside the northern motorway by the end of the year. Fanfare will be New Zealand’s largest public artwork, 24 metres high and weighing 25 tonnes, and featuring

360 wind-powered pinwheels able to be lit up on festive occasions. It was gifted to the CCC by the City of Sydney. All but $360,000 of the $3.3 million needed to install the sculpture has already been raised and the latest initiative is intended to cover the final portion. Always the right time...

I

n winter it's easy to put off exercising, either by avoiding your usual regime to snuggle warmly at home, or by promising you'll begin when the weather is better!

But getting the right mix of regular exercise can improve your health and vitality, which in winter, you need more than ever. So now is a great time to fix your body at Bodyfix.

Bodyfix is a community oriented gym with well-equipped facilities, a great atmosphere, loyal members and a stable, enthusiastic staff. The all-inclusive membership fees incorporate full use of the facilities (including after-hours access) and all classes so that there are no hidden costs – unless, of course, you choose to train regularly with a personal trainer to fast track your results! With a superbly set out weight room/cardio room, spin bikes and a large dedicated group exercise studio, a variety of programmes can be offered, including high impact interval training (HIIT) which continues to be particularly popular. “We try to keep classes interesting and innovative,” say owners Kirsten Gullery and Moana Williams. They have been in the industry for over 20 years and have seen many different exercise trends come and go, but the bottom line at Bodyfix is all about making exercise fun as well as working hard enough to get results. The staff members at Bodyfix are passionate about what they do and are committed to helping people achieve their goals whether it be losing weight, getting fit, training for an event or just meeting new people. “Knowing our members on an individual basis allows us greater opportunity to encourage and motivate

Bodyfix is all about “your daily training fix” and they will provide all the encouragement in the world to members who aim to exercise regularly and challenge themselves physically. them and makes them more accountable for their own workouts too.” Kirsten and Moana strongly believe that the loyalty of their gym members is because they love being part of Bodyfix. “We are 100% confident that everyone who walks through our door will feel the same way. It starts with

being greeted by our friendly front desk team, then being cared for and pushed to exercise to your capabilities with one of our expert personal trainers or in a group exercise class led by awesome, motivating instructors.” We all know that obesity threatens the long term health of many New Zealanders. It's scary to realise that very few people undertake the recommended 30 minutes of exercise a day, so it is vitally important to get people off the sofa and moving. Bodyfix is all about “your daily training fix” and they will provide all the encouragement in the world to members who aim to exercise regularly and challenge themselves physically. So don't wait for the “right time” to get started, do it today! Join up online, visit www.mybodyfix.co.nz or front up in person at Bodyfix and you'll be fit, happy and healthy before the winter ends!

Fab’ haircuts

for the entire family

The South City team

A

lways a fabulous haircut at a reasonable price and no appointment necessary - that’s what Haircuts for Haircuts is all about. There are two salons with that name – one at South City and the other at the Bush Inn Centre. The salons are amongst the longest-established and most popular unisex hair-cutting bars in the city. Michelle Butterfield is the original owner of both salons. She has created a sharp, stylish and contemporary look for the stores with a black, white and grey theme that includes the cutting chairs and the couches for waiting clients, the smart uniforms for the staff and the crisp-looking updated logo. Yet the history and tradition of the brand is not forgotten. Barbers’ poles grace the entrances to the salons, while there are framed cut-throat razors on feature walls and old-style newsprint wallpaper behind the basins. The attractiveness of the surroundings is matched by the expertise and experience of the staff. All the hairdressers are fully qualified stylists and Michelle puts any new applicants through a rigorous practical test to an exacting standard before she will appoint them.

The attractiveness of the surroundings is matched by the expertise and experience of the staff. All the hairdressers are fully qualified stylists “The success of this business is a result of the quality of the hairdressers I employ and to the friendly and welcoming work environment that we have here,” says Michelle. “Everyone is part of a productive and highly-functioning team that gets on really well together. Customers sense that and have a good experience when they come. Our service is friendly, professional and efficient and the conversation flows, making the whole process very enjoyable.”

Refurbished Bush Salon New inn look Bush Inn

Michelle also says that the two malls where her salons are located have the added benefits of being small and relaxed with plenty of parking and lots of other owner-operated business. Haircuts for Haircuts’ motto is “reasonably priced haircuts for the entire family” and the salons cater for all age groups from preschoolers to pensioners, men and women. “We have discounts for pensioners and students, as well as great rates for children. Pre-school children can have their hair cut for $8 while it’s only $13 for primary age children. A man’s dry cut is $20 and a lady’s one just $23 and all our clipper cuts are a snip at only $10.” The salons are busy with five staff cutting at weekends and four or five during the week, but no appointment is necessary. If people do have to wait for a short while, there is a TV tuned to music channels and newspapers and magazines available to keep them occupied. You can contact the South City salon on 366 0619 and the Bush Inn salon on 348 7008. Both salons are open seven days and also operate a loyalty card system with every sixth cut free to regular clients.

Get your body in

mint condition

I

t has been a long two decades since I last visited a gym. My memories are of the long walk between rows of treadmills when you entered, and the posturing males in the free-weights room.

The reality of Mint Health and Fitness is thankfully a world away from this experience. A boutique fitness and food facility is how Mint describe themselves, with a focus on whole body wellbeing, including relaxation and nutrition. Based at 31 Birmingham Drive in Middleton, it is an intimate and well set out space, and also home to the very popular Pure Café Company. My taste of Mint was a sample of their Ignition package – half hour sessions in nutrition and work out basics, topped off with a massage and a great coffee. Jane Syme is one of two nutritionists at Mint who provides excellent nutritional advice to clients. Gone are the days of callipers that rudely grabbed at parcels of skin to determine percentage body fat. Now it is as easy as relaxing on the bed while electrodes are placed on your skin and having a few measurements taken, with the resulting Body Impedance Analysis providing statistics on fat

and muscle tone of the body, as well as general cell health and hydration. For many it is a one-off visit with general guidance on healthy eating and portion size, and for others Jane will request blood tests and the use of a food diary to come up with the best nutrition plan for their body. It is a strange new world of weight machines for me out in the gym area. There is a wide range of equipment from the familiar bikes

safely and correctly. Personal training sessions are also open to those who are not members of Mint, as are the massage and nutritional services. Tom Shand is an experienced massage therapist with his clients seeking massages for general wellbeing, relaxation, or for more specific health issues. He practices Rolfing, alongside the more traditional massage techniques; while massage works with

and treadmill to free-weights, and plenty of space for floor exercises. Personal trainer Erin Mitchell patiently talks me through a number of the weight machines, which she uses as part of the sessions she provides. Many of her clients see her regularly, while for others it is part of a starter package to show new clients how to use the equipment

releasing the muscles of the body, Rolfing works with the fascia which wraps around the muscle. For the tight shoulders and neck of this writer, it feels like an amazing dynamic stretching. The end result for me – eat more protein, build a bit more muscle, and a realisation that I may just be ready to try out a gym membership again.

All of the events showcased are free of charge - a few of them are limited on numbers so make sure you book your space. Bardello kicked off the food festival on Saturday 5 July with a demonstration on making their delicious stone baked pizzas, and a chance to taste the results. Jax Hamilton, of New Zealand Masterchef fame, will be talking food, recipes, and about her cook books in an evening of fun, held in conjunction with Paper Plus Merivale. Registrations are necessary for this ‘over 18 years’ event. Jax will also be giving a cooking demonstration the following week, looking

Hairdressers who shine R

achel Legge took over ownership of the Rodney Wayne salon at Westfield Riccarton in September last year - a natural progression after six years of working for Rodney Wayne as a stylist and manager. She likes what Rodney Wayne has to offer for both clients and staff; for clients there is always a special in store – a free shower cap with every two Kérastase products purchased is available at present, and for staff an excellent professional development programme. The salon has 14 team members from a range of countries, and all with great skills and experience. Brahim, originally from Chile, has been working in the salon for four years, and is a specialist in hair and scalp maintenance related to hair loss and hair growth. Adding to the international experience is Sarah from the United Kingdom and Jake from Singapore, while for others such as Mary and Donna, there is over a decade of working for Rodney Wayne, and in the Riccarton salon.

Their clients come from all across the South Island for service which Rachel describes as the “royal treatment.” “We are always building, always growing,” says Rachel of the apprentices that the salon supports. For their many apprentices it is a busy few years of study – working full time while completing their qualifications and gaining the necessary experience. With a veritable feast of talent to choose from, Rachel is able to select the stylist who best fits each individual client, all of which ensures that they receive the best service possible. Their clients come from all across the South Island, from Wanaka, to the West Coast to Oamaru, with their loyal client base choosing to travel to the salon for their haircuts, and for service which Rachel describes as always giving the client the “royal treatment.” Rodney Wayne Riccarton stocks a full range of hair care products including Kérastase, Redken, Pureology and Matrix hair products. They also use only L’Oréal Professionnel colours, and specifically the INOA range of ammonia-free colours. For those who would like to refresh their colour for winter the salon offers a full complimentary consultation, including time and cost of the service. While appointments are recommended, Rachel is never one to disappoint, she says for those who choose a more spontaneous approach they will always be able to find a space in the busy salon.

supplements and health and sports nutrition, their natural skin and body care ranges are also very popular. Bess says that many people, including both men and women, are now looking for skin care ranges which are made from natural products and are free from potentially harmful ingredients such as parabens. When selecting a product, the texture or smell is always important, as well as where it has been made and any natural anti-ageing properties it may have. There are many to choose from including the very popular Trilogy range. During the two year period since curiosity got the better of the cattery owners Donna Barlow and Steve Lamont, the pair have made countless improvements to the facility as far as their time and financial resources can stretch. Reality is, cat owners have high expectations for their pets and Ashley Cattery must keep atop of such standards to please not only the owners, but more importantly, the whiskered ones themselves. With the capacity to board up to 80 cats at any one time, Ashley Cattery is a sizeable operation and holidays are in demand, Donna Barlow explains: “Public holidays and school holidays get very busy; we do like to ask people to book well in advance if they want their pet to stay with us over the busy period.” During their stay, cats will be treated to exemplary treatment by Donna and her well versed team which includes two part time vet nurses and five other on-call staff. The superb staff are the lifeblood of the busy cattery and Donna is very appreciative of her professional team. “Without the staff, this place simply could not run. Operating a cattery this size is not quite the lifestyle one would imagine, it takes a lot of hard work and commitment but the staff are a major help and of course we receive so much love back from the cats - that makes it all worthwhile.” The Ashley Cattery Facebook page is currently sat just below an impressive 500 ‘likes’ which is unsurprising considering the nature of the posts (the internet certainly does have a ‘thing’ for cats) which range from tearjerkingly sad to irresistibly adorable. The ever popular ‘cat of the week’ feature is an enviable

TALKING STRAIGHT ABOUT CROOKED TEETH Why choose Invisalign? Dr Grahame Dutton, from Duxton Dental, explains that one of the most common reasons that people choose Invisalign is because of the minimal impact it has on everyday life. Dr Dutton says that the aligners are so comfortable that people have no trouble wearing them for the recommended 22-24 hours per day. He explains that because the aligners are removable the teeth can be cleaned and flossed as normal, without food getting stuck around wires or brackets. Even before the Invisalign treatment is completed people are already enjoying the benefits of a better smile, because alignment starts right from the beginning.

How would you feel about straight teeth? Most people find that having straight teeth gives them confidence to smile more fully and that they also smile more. There is plenty of evidence that appearance makes a difference in the world we live and work in. If you want straight teeth it’s easier than you might have imagined. At Duxton Dental they can show you how. Why are crooked teeth a problem? Teeth that are not straight in your mouth create what dentists call “malocclusion”. Left untreated malocclusion can lead to gum disease and create abnormal amounts of stress on teeth and jaw, which results in premature tooth wear or breakages.

What do they look like? The Invisalign aligners are transparent and difficult to detect when worn and should you have an important meeting or event coming up that's causing concern, you can always remove the aligners for that short space of time.

What are the benefits of straight teeth? Teeth become easier to keep clean, therefore you have healthier gums. There is a decreased risk of abnormal wear because teeth are in the right place. Ultimately, orthodontics does more than make a pretty smile — it creates a healthier you. What about invisible braces? To achieve that great smile, Duxton Dental offers Invisalign as well as traditional metal or ceramic braces. Invisalign is a series of customised aligners manufactured for your teeth, and as you replace your aligners fortnightly, your teeth will gradually move into the final straightened position.

To get started on your orthodontic assessment phone Duxton Dental on (03) 348 5488 or visit their website on www.duxtondental.co.nz.

FREE 38 July 10, 2014 Metropol

How do I get started? It’s easy - visit Duxton Dental for a free consultation to determine if you are a suitable candidate for treatment. If you are then simply have impressions taken and processed. Then you will be able to view a short movie of the “tooth trip” from crooked teeth to your new straight smile. Treatment options , time frames and costs can then be discussed. Let Duxton Dental, help you, feel good about your smile.

here is no doubt that the current trend in wedding fashion is romantic or sophisticated, or both. With designs that are fitting, flowing, full or sleek, the fabrics are exquisite and the variety of styles and silhouettes will delight any spring or summer bride. Full skirts of satin or tulle are still available for brides who prefer traditional gowns, but teamed with beaded and embroidered sheers, a belt of sparkly bling or a bodice dazzling with crystals, they offer a contemporary take on ball gown shape and shimmer. If sleek fitting styles suit you, it is the season of sophistication. Long lean gowns ooze 1930s' film star glamour, bias cut satin that drapes and falls, drop-waist styles that hug the hips or A-line and trumpet skirts that are elegant and practical for gliding down the aisle. Retro '50s combines full skirted styles to mid calf or floor length with classic fabrics of lace and heavy duchesse satins for elegant simplicity. Romance is back with soft floaty

skirts and sleeves that recapture '70s' Boho style. In organza, voile, chiffon or crepe they are loose and lovely for summer cool and relaxed wedding style. The luxury of lace is featured in many styles and in many different guises. Delicate or dramatic it works beautifully on both contemporary and vintage styles and can be used in overlays, insets, sleeves, necklines or shadowing the back. A full lace gown or a lace-layered creation is extraordinarily feminine and reminiscent of Great Gatsby nostalgia, while sheer “illusion” décolletage and sleeves from the '50s' Grace Kelly look, have been re-popularised by Kate Middleton's beautiful royal gown. Cut and fit are also enhanced this season by intricate beading, crystal embellishments and silver shine. As well as highlighting Princess and Empire lines, lace or beaded shrugs, boleros and jackets are new accessories to wear with the still-popular strapless wedding

gown style. But increasingly strapless gowns are giving way to wide straps, cap sleeves, sheer sleeves to elbow or wrist and gowns featuring boat, sweetheart, 'V' and cowl necklines. For up to the minute elegance, the straight sheath dress combines absolute simplicity with versatile options for a train, a luxurious wrap or the return of a full length bridal coat. Add a classic veil of ribbon-edged tulle, an elaborate veil of lace or crystal beaded organza or perhaps try a little cocktail hat with a birdcage veil for '40s' allure. Current bridal gowns are rarely brilliant white, but adopt subtle and flattering tones of white, ivory, parchment and silver, or the vintage look that is beautifully captured in delicate magnolia, blush and antique rose. So be inspired by fabulous fabrics, elegant effects and sensational styles and know that whatever look you desire, there's a unique wedding gown waiting for you.

Creating the

exceptional “We make a piece that is fantastic and just for them,” says Marc Martinovich. From the new premises of Martinovich on Victoria Street, Marc and Nicola are doing just this.

A

s a master jeweller with many years of experience designing and creating one of a kind pieces by hand, Marc has also mastered the art of reading people. “It’s all about understanding their taste set,” he says, with the challenge being able to do this even when they are unclear themselves exactly what they are after. From a simple conversation Marc is able to find the answer to what would best suit each person – what will be the piece of jewellery that will overwhelm them today and they will love forever. He comes up with a rough sketch of the design during the initial appointment, using the form and lines of the ring to create a piece that they didn’t even think would exist. From there it is about working within a range of budgets to source materials specific for

each piece. Martinovich uses only the very best quality products which they purchase directly from the source, including hand cut stones. Drop into the store at 83 Victoria Street, or visit www.martinovich.co.nz, to talk to Marc and Nicola and see some of the exceptional pieces they create.

The Sunday roast S

elaks Roast Day is coming up on Sunday 3 August 2014. It’s all about gathering loved ones together and recapturing all the fun, fanfare and good times that go with a Sunday roast. In a series of recipes, in preparation for Roast Day, this issue Metropol presents Nici Wickes’ wonderful Dalmatian Inspired Pot Roasted Beef…

RECIPE The flavours in this dish are reminiscent of the famed Dalmatian dish pašticada – pot roasted beef with lots of herbs and spices in a rich, red wine gravy. Served as hot beef rolls, this makes a fantastic shared plate. Wine Match: Selaks Reserve Hawke’s Bay Syrah Prep Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 1 ½ – 2 hours Serves: 6 – 8 Ingredients 1.5 kg bolar or topside beef 2 cups Reserve Hawke’s Bay Merlot Cabernet 3 Tbsp chopped fresh rosemary 4 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced 2 Tbsp olive oil 3 onions, peeled and sliced 3 tomatoes, roughly chopped 8 – 12 baby carrots 1 bay leaf 3 – 4 cloves ½ tsp salt & ¼ tsp pepper ½ cup prunes, pitted Bread rolls to serve

42 July 10, 2014 Metropol

METHOD In a large pot, marinate the beef in one piece for at least an hour (or overnight) in the wine and rosemary. Remove the beef, reserving and setting aside the marinade for the sauce/gravy. Using the tip of a sharp knife, make small holes in the beef and insert garlic slices around the whole piece of meat. Heat the olive oil to medium to high in a cooking pot and brown the beef on all sides. Once browned, add the onions, cook a little and then add the chopped tomatoes and carrots. Add the reserved wine marinade (it should half cover the meat and vegetables); bring to the boil before lowering the heat to a simmer and adding all the remaining ingredients – bay leaf, cloves, salt and pepper – except the prunes. Cover and slow-cook over a low heat for 60 to 75 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding water if needed, to keep the meat half covered and moist. Add the prunes 20 minutes before the end. Remove the beef from the cooking pot and set aside to rest. Place the cooking juices on a medium to high heat and rapidly simmer until it thickens slightly (you can thicken with a little corn flour mixed with water if you wish). Serve the gravy, enriched with the onions, carrots and prunes in a small bowl on the side. Serve the sliced beef in warm bread rolls with shredded iceberg lettuce and lashings of gravy.

In the early 1870s, one of the most asked-for cocktails of all time was unveiled at the request of Sir Winston Churchill’s mother. Tale has it the cocktail was born in an elegant ballroom, at a party Lady Churchill was hosting. The ball was in honour of a Civil War general, who would later run for President of the United States. Lady Churchill was looking to impress. The cocktail was an instant sensation and was quickly given the moniker The Manhattan, after the name of the room where it was first tasted. Culinary hotspots Here's Metropol's round up of three great foodie hot spots to enjoy...

Duo Dining Room and Bar Duo is pronounced in Chinese and English in exactly the same way, and means “a lot”. A lot is what you get at this unique spot. Open from 11am until 11pm, seven days, you can enjoy a sumptuous lunch menu, as well as a great selection for dinner and dessert. While the address gives it as 12 Hereford Street, the main entrance is on Rolleston Avenue, and it is very accessible – handy to the Museum, Art Centre, the Botanic Gardens, and within the precincts of the YMCA, and with good parking. The emphasis is on genuine fusion cuisine – a delicious link between local produce and favourite food, and an Asian influence. All home-made, the menu is an absolute delight – one signature dish is Duo Pork Pockets – a bun stuffed with slowed cooked pork, coriander and jalapeno – and a magic mixture of textures and flavours. Pan-fried marinated lamb cutlets with spicy peanut sauce is another. Restaurant manager Sophia Su explains that Duo is multifunctional – catering, intimate dining, a work get-together, or a function in the curtained-off silk room. Local and international wines are cleverly matched with a range of dishes. Go there now. Your taste buds demand it! Phone (03) 423 1212.

Ilex Café restaurant The new visitors centre was designed to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Christchurch Botanic Gardens, and is well worth spending time there – along with a coffee or a meal. The building is striking – pavilion-like, which links clean glass panels and plant cell motifs and a pure white décor, with the beauty of the gardens, where it stands near the Avon. The menu is also clean, full of natural foods and flavours, in line with its environment – soups and salad, crudités of local vegetables – raw, pickled or cooked – beetroot cured Akaroa salmon and pumpkin and feta croquettes feature as light options. For mains you can choose hay-smoked local chicken, slow cooked lamb, grilled Canterbury steak sandwich, or select from a sumptuously stocked cabinet. Desserts are available as well as a range of beverages – good Canterbury wines, Bach Espresso Coffee, All Good sparkling juice and Aroha juices. When you are finished, roam the shop, the displays, educate yourself, or just go for a quiet wander outdoors in one of Christchurch’s iconic places.

The Astro Lounge is the casual side to the well-known Cook ’n’ with Gas, at 23 Worcester Boulevard. Not immediately obvious, you park and walk into a street-facing courtyard and there on the right is a Police Public Call Box doorway, just like the Tardis, and just like the Tardis, you walk through into a whole new world, where you can relax in a casual warm atmosphere, enjoy local food and beverages, large movie screen and live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Open Wednesday – Friday from 4pm on, and Saturday/Sunday from 12pm. While it orbits a “space” theme, the Astro lounge is eclectic in nature – a variety of ambience from wooden decking to outside seating, cosy in winter and bright and airy in summer; and a gentle slip from an 1860s’ villa aura to Star Wars and beyond. The menu is a dead giveaway – Klingon Calamari Salad, The Galaxy Platter, Star Grazer Burger, Pigs in Space, Pisces Shrimp Ceviche and Rings of Saturn (onion rings with aioli). It’s fun, it’s quirky and it is out of this world. Land there, check it out soon, and fill that space inside you. www.cookwithgas.co.nz

A refreshing interlude in your day… Ingenious! Tasty! Original! A Christchurch entity! A stroke of genius!

I

t’s SoYo, located on the corner of Riccarton Road and Rotherham St – a perfect place for those of us visiting Westfield Mall, or working in the area, to enjoy amazing frozen yoghurt, whether for a lunch snack, a kick start to the day, or a cool refreshing interlude…any time! The concept is stunningly simple, but so innovative it has you wondering why it hasn’t arrived before. All you do is walk in and choose a fill up from a range of frozen yoghurts; chocolate, melon, cookie dough, coconut, and au natural. You then top up from a delightful selection, including: chocolate fish, M&Ms, popping pearls, wafer sticks, kibbled hokey pokey, marshmallow, pineapple, rock melon, chocolate peanuts, grapes, jaffas, sour grapes, bitter balls, sour snakes, waffle cone pieces…you name it, it’s there. There are also a range of sauces to add to your creation. You then weigh and pay – walk out with something you have created yourself, and it is soooo delicious. SoYo continues to develop its range of flavours and toppings. Some favourites include pomegranate, mango, cookies and cream, green apple, white chocolate, with more to come. For those who need dairyfree options, they are there too, including the very popular chocolate flavour.

butterflies, salted caramel choc rocks, and blossom gummies. If you are in no rush, then there is an upstairs area seating 40, a lovely warm area with a music system so that you can have an aural element to your self-created dreamy yoghurt. There is even free wifi if you require it. Certainly it is a phenomenon overseas, but here it has taken a distinctly New Zealand flavour. Owner Cathy Wilson explains that

they have used all Christchurch businesses to set themselves up. “We are not a franchise,” she explains. “We are a family operated business.” They have used a Christchurch artist, branding company, architect and builders, so that this booming concept has a distinctly Christchurch emphasis. “We are creating an interesting and fun environment for people to socialise in,” says Cathy. “We can also cater for birthday parties - just call to book the booth seating or tables, and your party host.” “We believe there are not many places in

Christchurch at the moment where the younger crowd can meet with their friends.” Just looking around SoYo on a busy Saturday afternoon certainly lends credence to this idea, but in amongst the teenagers who are thronging to SoYo, are a lot of older faces! Call in and sample if you are in the Westfield Mall area. It is fun; it is different. It is inexpensive as well, and hey…you have to be responsible for the way you cobble things together. The ingredients are sublime. The experience is cool bliss.

G

urnard is an intriguing fish. Large pectoral (side) fins that open like wings endow the fish with a distinct appearance and give rise to nicknames such as ‘the butterflies of the sea’ and ‘sea robins’. In addition to seeming to fly, gurnard have ‘legs’ flexible spines that have become detached from the pectoral fin over time. These spines give the impression that the fish is walking but are, in fact, used to stir up the sea floor and access the small crustaceans that they feed on. Curiosities aside, gurnard is a deliciously sweet fish with firm, flaky flesh. Fondly called ‘carrots’ by fishers for their colouration, gurnard is an extremely versatile fish which works well with many flavours and styles of cuisine. Soup and stew recipes often call on gurnard for its ability to hold together well, however it is just as delicious pan fired, baked, roasted, poached or barbequed.

Method Season the fish with salt and pepper. Dust with rice flour, dip into egg white mixture and coat in coconut. Set asked in the refrigerator (this will allow the egg white to harden and set, making the crust stick better). Place the cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and mint leaves into a medium-sized bowl and toss together. Dress with lime juice and olive oil and season to taste. Set aside. Place frying-pan onto a medium heat, add the melted butter and pan fry the fish until golden, turning once. Add the lemon halves to the frying pan cut side down, and allow to caramelise alongside the fish. Place a mound of salad onto each of four plates. Place the coconut crusted fish on top of the salad, drizzle with olive oil, and garnish with caramelised lemons.

Wines of Canterbury have announced the winner of the Champion Trophy for the 2014 Wine Show. At the David Jackson Dinner in Christchurch recently, the 2013 Waipara Hills Waipara Valley Equinox Riesling was declared the top wine in the 2014 show.

T

he award was collected by Winemaker Simon McGeorge who was elated to accept the prestigious award. “I’m hugely excited to receive the Champion Wine Trophy, particularly given the strong competition this year,” Simon said. “This wine really shows why Waipara is the home of Riesling in New Zealand. Lifted and perfumed, yet with a depth that keeps you looking for the next character. The palate has weight and richness, but is also vibrantly fresh.” The chairman of the judging panel, wine writer and editor Jo Burzynska noted that “The Waipara Hills Equinox Riesling impressed the judges with the great purity and intensity of its palate,

with its fresh notes of lemon and lime and long mineral finish.” The judges were, Jo Burzynska (Chair), Editor Wine NZ, and Wine Editor for Viva, New Zealand Herald, Kirsten Creasy, Winemaker and Oenologist with Hill Laboratories, and local chef and Restaurateur, Jonny Schwass (Harlequin Public House and Gorilla). Wines of Canterbury Inc, which supports the region's grape growers and winemakers, covers the area bounded by the catchment area of the Waitaki River to that of the Clarence River in the north. Wines must have been made from grapes grown within these boundaries to be entered into the Awards.

Canterbury's best architectural T designs he best architectural designs in the Canterbury/Westland region were announced recently at the regional awards ceremony for the 2014 ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Held annually, these prominent awards celebrate the most innovative, impressive and considered architectural designs in the country. The awards recognise successful design in residential and commercial architecture across a range of categories including new homes, interiors, alterations and additions and industrial design. The regional awards, which are currently being announced across the country, will be followed by the national awards to be held at a gala ceremony in the Bay of Islands on Friday 26 September. This year eight regional awards were given to four winning Canterbury designers. The award winners are Greg Young of Life style Architecture, Jason Walker of WeirWalker Architecture, Chris Wheeler of Hierarchy Ltd and Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 Design. In addition four highly commended awards were announced. The highly commended designers are Jason Walker of WeirWalker Architecture, Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 Design and Chris Wheeler of Hierarchy Ltd. Architectural Designers New Zealand GM, Astrid Andersen, said that each year the quality of the award entries is lifted.

“Entries to the awards have had a steady and impressive improvement, which makes it even harder to select the award winning designs! This year we have had a wonderful panel of experienced judges and this only adds to the quality and standard of the awards. Designers in the Canterbury region have a rare opportunity to contribute greatly to the rebuild of a city and its suburbs. It is wonderful to see the variety in designs and ultimately the way Canterbury designers have embraced this challenge. “As a whole, we are consistently impressed by the creativity and provocativeness of our members. They face the challenges of design head on and come back with amazing concepts that astound and impress,” said Andersen. Judges said that the strongest category across all regions of this year's awards was small to medium homes. The strength of this category

demonstrates the growing popularity of compact, well designed homes that fit within a budget and that prove that affordable homes are able to showcase the best in design.

SiloStay by Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 Design Location: Christchurch Akaroa Rd, Little River Award: Commercial Interior Architectural Design Award Description: Created by the team at F3 Design, the SiloStay is a collection of re-purposed grain silos designed to function as serviced apartments. The apartment complex is situated in Little River and comprises of eight individual silo units, an accessible ground level silo, a high tech energy generating silo, and an on-site waste water treatment facility. All aspects of the SiloStay project are uniquely designed and custom made to create these grain silos with a twist. Judge's comments: This radical proposition is executed with finesse. Industrial materials and details are invested with sophistication. It looks like a fun place to spend a night and to discover the quirky details.

Marina Point by Greg Young of Life Style Architecture Award: International Entry – Winner of Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award Description: This holiday home has been designed for the use of two New Zealand families, and embraces what is traditional in Fiji rather than in NZ. There are four bures with separate functions which are accessed individually through boardwalks, reminiscent of local resorts.

(Left) 111 Riccarton Road by Jason Walker of WeirWalker Architecture Award: Joint winner of the Commercial/Industrial Architectural Design Award Description: 111 Riccarton Road forms the edge of the busy and vibrant shopping precinct of Riccarton; the development is a carefully curated stand of six functionally adaptable rental units that contain loft spaces that can oscillate between primarily retail and commercial space. The project formally employs a simple gesture of breaking the bulk of the building by splitting it into distinct forms to not only lessen the impact of its physicality but to allow it to respond to its urban condition at the intersection of a major commercial/retail arterial, as well as to articulate the simple volumes for more specific uses.

The apartments are designed to maximise the usable space internally and in the outdoor living spaces. They're open plan and use expansive glazing. The construction is lightweight to minimise the cost of foundations, and the material palette is oiled cedar with a black frame, allowing it to naturally weather.

Add a sense of décor presence

T

ransforming a room can begin with something as simple as a single occasional chair. Add new artworks, different cushions or a stylish lamp and in no time the character of a room has been completely altered. Finding these special items to add decor presence can however, take time. That's where Urbano Interiors come in. Urbano Interiors have been a presence in Christchurch for many years. People will no doubt remember their distinctive Harewood Road location. Now they are based at 145 Blenheim Road and their collections are as beautiful, stylish and of as high a quality as ever. Walk into the showroom and you are transported to a classic age of full grain vintage leather suites and wing chairs, of hand-crafted solid oak dining tables and of French country style cabinets and linen loose cover sofas. Centre stage in the showroom is a stunning dark brown deep-buttoned chesterfield settee that is redolent of a London gentlemen's club and that would grace any study in a traditional home. Equally striking is a dining suite in American oak – the table a unique piece of timber with beautiful detailing that can be complemented by a range of chair designs. The suite can also be matched with a sideboard or an occasional table, an entertainment unit or a hall table.

The Urbano team Matt Lisk, Jony Downes, Allison Jones, Tony Downes If it is the industrial look you are after Urbano Interiors have a melange of styles that you could mix and match. Metallic furniture can be paired with French country accents or leather furniture to create a refined sense of beauty with a utilitarian edge. Urbano Interiors provide a complete furnishing service for a home. Not only do they have unique furniture collections sourced both from overseas and made locally, but they also have interior accessories – lamps, rugs, trendy accessories and artworks. The walls of the showroom look rich and warm with a series of still life contemporary paintings in varying shades of red - perfect for a modern home. Changing the world… one piece of furniture at a time

A

story book bird house, ballerinas dancing their way along a headboard, and a flock of moustaches floating across a table – it’s the stuff of fairy tales and an insight into the creative mind behind Hibiscus. Kirstee Griffiths’ creations are so much more than just a piece of furniture. Each item comes in to her hands as an old and often battered piece of wooden furniture. Many hours of sanding, painting and working magic with fabric decoupage, transform it into an entirely new modern piece - and one that is also filled with history. A gift of an old family table that had been reinvented with Hawaiian print decoupage was Kirstee’s original inspiration to learn the craft herself. “That moment was fairly pivotal for me as a designer, with the realisation that amazingly bright and bold prints could be used on furniture,” says Kirstee. “It opened up a part of my

creative mind that I hadn't seen in a while.” Over the past two years she has spent hours and hours honing her skills, and working on a wide array of pieces. “I entirely redecorated my own home before embarking on a wider market,” says Kirstee. “So six months behind a sander and bolts of fabric took me fairly close to perfecting the decoupage.” Her line of vintage book birdhouses began when she embarked on a handmade gift year in 2013, and made her first birdhouse as a gift for a friend. It was so loved that Kirstee decided to make more. Often made from past treasured Golden Books, each birdhouse contains seven books and is completely weather proof. “People connect with them as memories of their childhood. I often hear squeals of 'Oh, I used to have that book!’” says Kirstee.

“It opened up a part of my creative mind that I hadn't seen in a while.” -Kirstee Griffiths

Creating her work is so much more than making a piece of furniture for Kirstee. It is part of her life philosophy to battle against consumerism and the resulting ‘throw away’ items that have travelled the world to get here. It is also a message that she is passing on to her children, with her daughter Sailor, aged nine, completing her newly adorned bedroom decoupage by making herself a stool. Originally showing her work at Encraftment in

Christchurch, Kirstee’s furniture and birdhouses are now stocked at Pay It Forward in Mairehau, as well as gracing the shop wall of HAPA in Re:Start Mall, and Revamp Vintage in Merivale, and in Marlborough and Auckland. To know what Hibiscus is all about is to see the work, the colour and the fun of it in the flesh – check out the local stores, visit her store at www.felt.co.nz/shop/hibiscus or Kirstee’s Facebook page www.facebook/HibiscusNZ.

Classic, elegant, timeless,

Michelle sells the furniture in several ways – on line through www.wovenveranda.co.nz, at various country shows such as the Christchurch A&P Show and the Culverden Fete and through very popular weekend open days at her home near Darfield – once a month during spring. The next open days are from Friday 1 August to Sunday 3 August. Michelle has the perfect setting to display the furniture at her open days – a large country house with verandas and patios and a beautiful garden with trees and shrubs that are at their best in spring. What a wonderfully relaxing way to buy furniture.

It was all to do with meeting up again by chance with an old Kiwi acquaintance who now just happens to design and manufacture outdoor furniture in Sweden – the kind of furniture that is perfect for the New Zealand patio, deck, veranda and garden lifestyle. The rest as they say is history. The first container of furniture was sent to Michelle three years ago. Number 11 container has just arrived and is ready for sale. And what wonderful treasures have emerged from that container – traditional-style wicker armchairs reminiscent of the age of Somerset Maugham and of Singapore’s Raffles Hotel, wicker dining chairs in classic and contemporary designs, rattan chairs and side tables, wicker settees and swing seats. The furniture is Scandinavian in design and is made by skilled weavers in Cirebon city, the heart of natural fibre furniture in Indonesia. The furniture makers in this town have been weaving with natural cane since the 1920s and their expertise is renowned. The furniture comes in three different colour ways- sandy beach, teak leaf and natural, while the chair cushions come in four different colours – cream, dark grey, chocolate and beige. These can of course be changed to suit customers’ own tastes and personal environment. Dining tables to go with the dining chairs are not forgotten either – and these are rather special. They are made from plantation teak forests planted in Indonesia by Dutch immigrants and each one is by law individually

Michelle has the perfect setting to display the furniture at her open days – a large country house with verandas and patios and a beautiful garden with trees and shrubs that are at their best in spring. Because Michelle sources the furniture direct from the distributors in Sweden without any middlemen or costly overheads for permanent premises, she can offer it at very affordable prices. Take a drive into the country for the upcoming open days, unwind in the garden and admire the range and quality of WovenVeranda’s furniture, cushions, knee rugs and outdoor fabrics. You can contact Michelle at WovenVeranda on (03) 318 3636 or 027 324 2327 or by email wovenverand@xtra.co.nz.

The secret to French culinary expertise

F

orty years of French culinary expertise and style has landed on our shores in the form of the inimitable Staub cast iron cookware. Loved by internationally renowned chefs such as Paul Bocuse, Hiroyuki Hiramatsu and Stephan Stiller the brand is lauded for its style and functionality. A stand out piece from the new crop of Staub is the Cocotte with steamer - designed to work equally well on all types of cooktops, including induction. There are several unique features to the Staub cast iron cookware, not least of which are the self-basting lids and the matte black

enamel interior that, with use, becomes a natural non-stick surface. The flat Staub lids have been designed to allow less moisture to escape while their dimpled inner surface creates a type of rainfall effect as moisture gathers and drips onto the food below. Testing has revealed this system to be nine times more effective in keeping foods moist and retaining natural flavours than other types of lids. The Cocotte with steamer insert is a piece designed for year round cooking – slow cooked casseroles and braises during the winter months and steamed fish, chicken and vegetables for the warmer months. The Staub collection of cookware is available nationally from department stores and independent kitchenware retailers.

Pitfalls of home improvement Everyone knows that a home's features and improvements can make or break a sale. But when it comes to selling your home, you need to know that not all home-improvements are created equal.

W

Home office remodels

hile some home improvements are worth the time and money that you put into them, many will not make a difference and will even hurt your resale value. If you are thinking of selling your home anytime soon, think twice before making any of these improvements:

Although many families have someone who works from home at least part time, a complete office remodel can be a hurdle to other uses for valuable square footage. Avoid custom bookcase installations and bulky built-ins that are difficult and expensive to remove when you sell your home.

Altering a home's style Changing a room’s function

Home improvements and renovations that don't match your home's original style can be a huge mistake. So updating your country home with a super sleek look may not appeal to your target market. Differing styles within a home will make it less appealing for buyers to buy it.

Transforming a living room into a large kitchen isn't always your best bet. Altering a room's function is a big risk and while it's great to change your space to your needs, others may find it hard to deal with or even harder to put a value on it.

Unfinished or poorly done work

Too much taste

It's one thing to try to save money on projects, however, it's quite another to do a mediocre job. Remember, when buyers walk through your home, they are adding up what it's going to cost them to redo what you didn't do correctly.

Don't go crazy with your decorations. Using wild colours, outlandish fixtures and unique fabrics may be more of a deterrent to potential buyers when you sell your home. Remember the more unique your home is, the less appealing it will be to the masses, and if you care to get your home sold for top dollar, you'll listen to the masses.

Over improving for the neighbourhood This is the biggest mistake that homeowners make. That is not realising that the value of their home has a limit. There are two reasons you should take on home improvement projects. You should do them for your own pleasure and in hopes of increasing the resale value of your home. As long as you spend time and money for the first reason, you'll be OK. It's when you do so for the second reason that you may be in for disappointment.

Installing fancy technology Technology is changing fast. Chances are that whatever state of the art gadget you install in your home today, will be obsolete by the time you sell your home. Remember when everyone was wiring their homes for internet? Now everything is wireless. Some of us have all these extra outlets reminding us of our grand plans.

Landscaping ideas for home gardeners Do you have the same dilemma that I have, your home landscaping needs more pizazz in order for your home to have increased street appeal?

Home landscaping will not simply involve sticking plants into your lacklustre front or back garden to make it look green. If you are truly going to have the street appeal that you require you must plan and actually design your landscaping to achieve this desire. You have the option to hire a landscape design engineer to draw up the ultimate landscaping plan. While this really is the ultimate idea, if you are more of a DIY person here are some tips on tackling it yourself: 1. First you will need to clear the overall area that you will be designing and start from scratch. This will provide you a better 'canvas' to work with. 2. Now make a sketch of the overall look that you would like to have included in your landscaping plan or backyard garden. 3. Create a list of plants, trees, and shrubs that you want to plant. The plants that you want to add to your garden or front yard should work well with the climate in your geographic area and you should take into consideration the seasons. You want to have a mixture of plants that bloom at different

times or seasons throughout the year, winter, spring, summer, and autumn. By having a plant that blooms in a very different season you will make your garden have a focal point even when other plant varieties are not in season. 4. Create a plan that encompasses a layered bed. At the back row of your garden plan, have plants that grow tall, so you have a base for your plan. In your design have plants that descend in height to the smallest type of plant in the front. 5. Your plan should have irrigation or sprinkler systems incorporated in the plan

from the start. I actually use the irrigation style of sprinklers in my garden so specific plants are watered and I can control how much water each zone or plant will get. Some plants need more water than other plants. 6. In your initial plan you should include garden patios, furniture, gazebos, perhaps a barbeque area. You add this to your initial plan so you can design the irrigation system to not hit these areas, thus saving water and not damaging outdoor furniture. 7. I absolutely love the calming effect of a waterfall or water feature. These are awesome low cost attractions for your landscaped garden and can add a focal point to your design. You can vary the look of your landscaping plan with these low cost ideas. By following these tips you will save money but it will take advanced planning and a small amount of creativity. Imagine when you look out your window and you see the landscaped lawn and garden that you designed and built yourself, what a great feeling that will be. Or conversely, when your neighbours compliment you on the way your front yard and landscaping turned out, now that is the definition of street appeal.

ucked into a gorgeous store at 270A Cranford Street, Groovy Costumes has been helping people find the right costume for the right event at this location since August 2013. But for those occasions which are less about dressups and more about dressing up, the Cranford Street site is now the home of Groovy Suit Hire, after owner Charise O’Connell purchased the stock from Deans Suit Hire. With suits, waistcoats, suspenders, ties, bow ties, shirts, shoes, even top hats and walking sticks for all shapes and sizes, Groovy Suit Hire is the perfect place to go if you’re heading to a wedding, formal or something equally as stylish. its retail range, with a wide array of costumes and accessories available for purchase. “There are always going to be those events, such as the Sevens or the food festivals, where Groovy Costumes and their customers don’t want to risk damaging a hired costume,” Charise says. “So we’ve extended the retail range to ensure people have those options available.” Guess there’s no excuse not to let loose

Get your holiday home working

E

scaping to your own holiday home has been part of the New Zealand lifestyle for decades. For many people it still is, but the variety of holiday homes encompasses everything from the humble bach, cottage or bungalow to luxury apartments, mansions and villas. Whether your holiday home is just for you and your family to enjoy, or you seek a more commercial arrangement, holiday home rental can provide additional income that helps pay the costs of rates, mortgage, insurance and maintenance.

Private rental You may choose to advertise and administer the rental of your holiday home yourself. Check on similar rental homes to establish a rate per night and use a standard rental agreement that includes any particular terms and conditions you require (eg maximum number of guests, non smoking, BYO linen, pets-friendly, minimum stay, refundable bond for any damage and arrangements for cleaning and exchange of keys.)

Holiday rental companies Holiday rental companies administer the letting of your property for you and for many people it's less hassle than renting your holiday home privately. Either by annual fee or a percentage fee of each night's rental they will advertise, sign up tenants, retain keys, check on the property and arrange for cleaning as well as collecting and forwarding money to your account.

Lease back rentals If you own an apartment or villa within a hotel or resort complex, there is usually a lease-back option when you don't require the property yourself. The hotel or resort accept bookings to accommodate guests in your apartment or villa, providing you with a percentage payment each month after cleaning and administrative costs have been deducted. Usually body corporate fees are required and the standard of all fittings and furnishings must be commensurate with the style of the hotel or resort.

Preparing for guests 1. Advertising – have good photos for ads or website 2. Keep an inventory of all items supplied in your holiday home 3. Lock away any valuable or special items to protect against breakage 4. Provide copies of appliance instruction manuals 5. Supply essentials like toilet rolls, cleaning products, spare light bulbs 6. Print information on emergency contact numbers, rubbish collection 7. Ensure all appliances work 8. Make sure your property is clean and

comfortable 9. Provide adequate heating and bedding for all seasons 10. Consider a guestbook for feedback on your holiday home Worldwide surveys on the most sought after features for a summer holiday rental are: scenic location, easy access to pool or beach, outdoor patio or terrace, family or pet friendly properties, a barbeque, comfortable beds and affordability! If your holiday home offers any or all of these, consider renting it out and let it work for you instead of being vacant during weekends and holidays.

If your workplace facilities are out of action due to an incident. Call our RAPID Response Unit!

Checklist for hiring a

painting contractor H iring a painting contractor will certainly take the stress out of your house painting task. A professional paint job protects your home or property from harsh weather for years to come; and it makes your home more desirable. And don’t forget, a great paint finish increases your property’s value. Painting contractors have the necessary skills and experience to complete your painting task efficiently and effectively. But finding the right contractor needs your careful consideration. Here is a checklist for hiring a painting contractor…

Painting Company

Things you should remember

•Do they guarantee their work and their products? •How long have they been in painting business? •Do they have insurance? •Do they subcontract their work or they perform everything themselves?

You should get all your agreements and contracts in writing. If you feel the contract is too good to be true, there is something missing. Your contract should include everything, such as what they are painting, preparation details, paint colours, what they will use on different parts of the house, how they are going to protect your valuables and plants, how much time they will take to finish

Safety •What type of products do they use? •Do they follow safe painting practices? •Do they follow manufacturer's recommendation or specification? •Do they follow industry standards?

Trust and confidence

Contact Simon

•Do they provide written guarantees of their work? •Do they provide references? •Do they provide free estimates? •Do they perform pre-job inspection and measure each task for accurate pricing? •Do they have any certifications? •Do they provide written contracts? •Do they provide answers to all your questions? •Do they respond to their phone calls? •Are they a member of any association? •Can they assist with décor and colour schemes? Once you have all these questions answered, dig a little deeper when asking for references. Anyone can give you positive references. Get their last few projects details and get a couple of referrals from their clients too.

You should get all your agreements and contracts in writing. If you feel the contract is too good to be true, there is something missing.

the task, how and when you are going to pay them, Etc. You should compare each and every detail between different painting contractors. Don't believe everything they say, unless they give it to you in writing. All in all, you need to feel comfortable with the contractor you hire. Remember, when it comes to hiring a painting contractor, every little detail matters; it's not only about the price.
