Living with ‘Style’ in Christchurch
I hadn’t realised the importance of the wise old saying “Choose your battles” until I had children. My children have always been fairly strong willed and attempting to win a battle over them eating fancy mixed lettuce leaves (when they were young) was only going to make them focus all their energy, troops, reinforcements, munitions and time into that one resistance; whilst my military forces were weak and scattered from a long list of things to get done and general fatigue. They won that one! Angela Bennett, Editor The saying ‘choose your battles’, or ‘pick your battles’ appears to be attributed to the brilliant Chinese military strategist, Sun Tzu. He was a legend on the battlefield and (it’s widely accepted) author of The Art of War written over 2000 years ago. His strategy has been proven many times in history. When a country tries to fight a war on two or more fronts it often struggles to secure them – most of the time it’s important to deal with one issue at a time and let the others slide. Being stretched too thinly is not a good position to be in on any of life’s ‘fronts’. With that oft heard saying so well entrenched as a metaphor of life where we compete or battle for all sorts of things from university places to jobs, market share for our businesses, houses, life partners, places on sports teams, popularity, respect, love… I was intrigued to hear of modern day experiments on how humans choose their battles. Professor Nick Chater revealed in The Human Zoo on BBC radio recently that actually “when it comes to choosing, we aren’t very good at it.” He said there are many experiments where people are given an easy or difficult task; typically it is general knowledge questions. When given the easy task they think they have done well, but when given the hard task they think they have done badly. But in comparison to others they might have done well. So it seems people typically choose the easy task as the one they want to be measured on. The problem with this is that you don’t know how you compare to others. “What you really need to do,” says Professor Chater, “is compare yourself to other people.” Experiments in which people were tested and given a known disadvantage proved that people who were weaker discovered they had to specialise or concentrate their efforts in one area. “We can see this played out in life,” the professor said. “A younger sibling may feel it is hopeless to compete with an older sibling’s academic successes and decide to concentrate on sport or music. A danger we always face is choosing to compete on things that ‘feel’ easy, but of course many other people will fall into this trap too! So the apparently easy options (for example, becoming a successful novelist rather than a successful quantum physicist) may turn out to be the most crowded: what appears the easy route, in fact turns out to be the hard option.” It seems we not only have to think about what battles we can win, but where the outcome of that winning or losing will take us.
Think about it… Choose your battles wisely. After all, life isn't measured by how many times you stood up to fight. It's not winning battles that makes you happy, but it's how many times you turned away and chose to look into a better direction. Life is too short to spend it on warring. The Lapelles
T
he Lapelles is the music of Brad Banks and Camila Leal Rossi. This Christchurch based duo, established in 2013, have become known for their signature indie/folk sound which is both unique and captivating. Recently The Lapelles released their debut single, Consolation Road, in the lead up to the release of their EP later this year – have a listen at https://soundcloud.com/thelapelles/c onsolation-road. Brad, who some will remember as guitarist in the popular and multi-award winning band Dukes, has worked with artists such as Dave Dobbyn, INXS, Pretenders and Blondie. I caught up with Brad and Camila to discover a little more about their latest album and what’s coming up in their music endeavours… How old were you when you discovered your love of singing/music? Brad: I started playing guitar after discovering one in a wardrobe at home when I was 9. My brother had given up and my parents asked if I wanted lessons. I agreed to at the time just to please them, but after one lesson I was hooked. I learnt how to play the Drunken Sailor that day and have used those two chords – E minor and D - almost every day ever since. Camila: I have always loved music; it has been an important part of my life in one way or another for as long as I can remember. Did you ever dream then, of making music a career choice? Brad: Half way through 6th form (Year 12) I knew I wanted to do music as a career. I didn’t think my parents would buy it though, so I had to trick them into letting me study Music by telling them I wanted to be a Music Teacher. I went to the Nelson School of Music instead of Year 13, then to Jazz School here in Christchurch and then on to Teachers College. After five long years of study I think the joke was well and truly on me - but I did get my way and have been Teaching and performing ever since.
Camila: A lot of amazing artists; The Paper Kites, Ben Howard, Passenger - just to name a few. I’m inspired by artists who aren't afraid to do their own thing.
Camila: I’ve always had the dream of being onstage and I hope I never lose that; but I never realised that I could actually do it, until I finished high school and found myself doing it! Music is more a way of life than a career choice for me; I just have to do it. Who has inspired you in your musical career? Brad: There are so many bands and musicians that I love, both new and old. Currently I’m into the new young Nashville artists that are emerging. I’ve been lucky enough to support Dave Dobbyn over the years in Dukes, and have spent countless gigs watching him play side of stage. I love the way he weaves melodies into every aspect of his music. He’s a killer guitar player. Other NZ musicians I really admire are Gwyn Renolds who teaches at Jazz School, Godfrey Degrut - an amazing producer and writer, brothers Jo and Matt Barus – both so musical, LA Mitchell. I’ve just started playing with Ben Eldridge, a guitarist who I’ve admired for years. He plays some guitar in our first single Consolation Road too. We have a side jazz duo going.
What is the inspiration behind your debut single and the upcoming EP? Brad: A lot of the songs I write are stories about outcasts. I remember writing Consolation Road really quickly. I had an image of a cowboy version of the prodigal son – a dejected Christchurch cowboy (are there cowboys in Christchurch?!), coming home after years away to try patch things up and start his life where he left off, only to find everyone has moved on… the EP follows that theme with a couple of sappy love songs for good measure. Camila: It sounds totally cliché but honestly ‘life’. Each song has a story, a message, every time we write music it’s a way for us to communicate something. You write because you have something to share. It’s cathartic. What have you enjoyed most about the creative and recording processes? Brad: Musically, for a long time I had been focused on Dukes, which has been an amazing experience, but it did push my songwriting aside. I’m loving working with Camila who’s a breath of fresh air and taking a new approach to writing and recording. I have a home studio so most of our recordings get done there with some help from a friend Rob Payne who also has a studio. It’s great as we get to take our time with the creative process and aren’t pressured by expensive studios to get things done quickly. Camila: We have had full reigns on this project. So each and every part you hear on this album has been decided by us. It was amazing to hear the songs develop from our live sound to the fuller sound we had envisioned. It has been great to create something which is totally true to where we are with our music right now.

What has the feedback on your single been like? Great! It’s a funny song to put out as a single in some ways as it’s so stripped back and doesn’t really carry the verse/chorus format – it’s just three verses. We liked the idea of doing something really simple. We filmed a video clip for it here in Christchurch which was a lot of fun. Nothing quite like filming a video on a freezing Christchurch winter’s day! What other creative endeavours do you enjoy? Brad: I love the creative endeavor of how I’ll next try to get the trout on the end of my fishing lure when nothing else is working. It turns out that fish are much smarter than me. Camila: I’m currently studying at the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts, doing a musical theater degree, so dancing, singing and acting are a huge part of my everyday life. I love ballet; I’ve been dancing since I was 5. For me dancing is like making music, I couldn’t live without it. What were you doing the last time the thought went through your mind, ‘I shouldn’t be doing this’? Brad: Amanda, my wife, and I have a new baby girl - that would be up there for sure! I think I’m totally out of my depth - the day Maisie came home from hospital with Amanda, I pretended like I had it all figured out so that I didn’t freak out. I still don’t really have any idea what I’m doing, but she’s so much fun and we’re loving it. I’m now an expert nappy technician. Camila: I had a bungee cord wrapped around my ankles and thought “Am I really about to willingly jump off a bridge?” But I’m so glad I did it! What is one thing that Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? Brad: I’m obsessed with apricots. Camila: English is my second language! I’m South American, I moved here from Uruguay when I was 12, so I’ve only been around NZ for 8 years.

Three new buildings in three months
H
alfway through Rangi Ruru’s 125th Anniversary Year it has already been a significant year for achievements. Principal Julie Moor explains the school has commenced work on their fourth new building for Music and Theatre Arts, after three new buildings have been opened in the last three months. The Gibson Centre (Information Technology and Library) and Science Centre were opened in early April by Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority head, Roger Sutton, and Mana Wāhine (Student Services and Social Sciences) was opened late last month by Sir Tipene O’Regan. Julie Moor, says while the school reflects on the rich 125 year old history, Rangi Ruru is also implementing a plan to ensure they have the best educational environment for girls for the next 100 years. “This development is an important milestone not only for Christchurch but for girls’ education,” she says. “These are quite simply exceptional buildings which have been designed specifically for girls. Rangi Ruru is a progressive school in both the learning environment and the pastoral care we provide. As the city continues to rebuild, we are proud of what we have all achieved in a relatively short period of time, with the concept plans for the “Project Blue Sky” campus redevelopment having first been announced publicly in July 2012.”

U.C’s student hub wins Interior Award
T
he University of Canterbury’s new student hub has won its category in the 2014 New Zealand Interior Awards. The University’s Undercroft student area in the James Hight building was a large bike shed before the earthquakes but the refit of the area has seen the Undercroft become a social centre for students with a food court, selection of cafes and retail outlets, as well as areas to relax in.

Judges said the fact this was achieved under intense time and seismic pressures speaks not just of design integrity, but of collaboration between many communities for the purpose of creating a welcoming shelter for students.

unning until 2 August, Blood Brothers is a musical you must not miss! With music and lyrics created by Willy Russell, it is based loosely on the 1844 novella The Corsican Brothers by Alexandre Dumas. The story is a contemporary nature and nurture plot, revolving around fraternal twins who were separated at birth. The twin’s different backgrounds take them to opposite ends of the social spectrum; one becoming a councillor and the other unemployed. They both fall in love with the same girl, causing a tear in their friendship and leading to the tragic death of both brothers. Originally developed as a school play, Blood Brothers debuted in Liverpool before Russell transferred it to West End for a short run in 1983. The musical won
the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical and went on to a year-long national tour before returning for a revival in the West End in 1988 where it stayed at the Noël Coward Theatre for three years. After transferring to the Phoenix Theatre in 1991, Blood Brothers spent more than 24 years in the West End, and played more than 10,000 performances, becoming the third longest-running musical production in West End history. The musical has been produced with success on tour, on Broadway and elsewhere, and it has developed a cult following. Blood Brothers at The Court is a world-class production with an outstanding cast. ecause of his dedication to – and his love for – teaching children to play musical instruments, Nolan Hungerford is a difficult man to pin down for an interview.
Teaching, with the help of a handful of tutors, at five schools around Christchurch – one as far away as Pegasus – as well as giving private lessons, arranging public performances for youngsters and their participation in competitions like the Rock Quest is certainly a timeconsuming task that keeps him busy seven days a week. I managed to track Nolan down one recent Tuesday evening at the Headless Mexican restaurant at Sumner, where some children were getting their first opportunity to perform in front of an audience, usually playing guitar or drums, or singing. Of course, much of the audience was made up of families supporting their children, many of whom were not yet in their early teens. The place was continually busy with the movement of the children getting on and off stage and performing under the supervision or accompaniment of Nolan. Managing to get away from the stage for a short period while one of the tutors took over, Nolan told me that the number of children performing at the restaurant changed from week to week, ranging from one to 30. “Kids turn up, play a couple of songs, get the buzz, and come back again next week,” says Nolan. “We teach many musical instruments but kids need a place to play in front of an audience if they ever want to become public performers. “It all started with one student who was learning to sing and play the guitar. I was becoming frustrated because she wouldn't learn her songs. “I thought, let her play in different cafes and bars around Sumner.

We went to six or seven places in one evening. In the first place, she was terrible. At the last place, she sounded awesome.” It is out of this that the Christchurch School of Rock developed, with the help of tutors specialising in different instruments. By now, you have probably seen Nolan's colourful van with “School of Rock” written on the sides in the streets of Christchurch. “I started teaching two weeks after I learnt to play the saxophone, when I was 12. Soon, I was teaching saxophone, trumpet, trombone and clarinet. In third form, at the age of 13, my music teacher arranged for me to teach a symphonic band.” At present, Nolan has been involved with bands competing in the Smokefreerockquest, with the Canterbury final held at the Aurora Centre, Burnside High School, on June 13. The winners will go into the national final.

Experience the Antarctic without leaving Chch
A
ntarctica is the Earth's southernmost continent, 14 million square kilometres of it containing the geographic South Pole, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It is wild and cruel, yet beautiful and enigmatic; the focus of some of the extremes of human endeavour and bravery, and surprisingly rich in life forms which have adapted to a forbidding environment. For most of us here, the connection with this continent is a distant and fanciful one, and this is where the International Antarctic Centre comes into its own. There, as it states in one of its brochures, “you can have an authentic Antarctic experience without leaving Christchurch.” Established in 1992, the Centre is located in the heart of a working Antarctic campus close to Christchurch International Airport. It is from here that many Antarctic missions are organised, and the Centre is one of Christchurch’s core tourist attractions. It is good to see that the Centre continues to evolve. As Manager Nicki Dawson explains, a lot of money has gone recently into improving effects – from a more alluring and almost mystical entryway, to the creation of effects that echo real life experiences. For example, soon you will be able to enjoy learning about
flying to Antarctica while seated in a replica format – it all enhances the learning impact. The Antarctic Gallery covers a range of topics from modern day Antarctica from treaty partners and conservation, wildlife and sea life, geological history, through to a little about daily life at Scott Base. You will be able to understand how scientists and visitors live there, how they eat and what they wear. Try to time your visit for the feeding of the little blue penguins (10.30am and 3.30pm) in a specially designed habitat. You can watch from surface or underwater level and learn more about these birds, the world’s smallest penguin. Many initially rescued and cared for by Napier Marineland they are able to live out their remaining years in safety. If you are keen enough, you can experience the effects of an Antarctic storm. This area was opened in 2003 by Sir Edmund Hillary, who explained that, with the wind chill factor getting down to minus 35 degrees; it was very close to the real thing. Don’t worry, jackets and overshoes are provided! Then there is a stimulating 4D movie experience – a ride in a ship complete with ice floe collisions, drifting snow flakes and curious wildlife. As well as Ice Voyage there is Happy Feet 4D. Don’t miss the Hagglund ride either. It's not for the fainthearted, but the course is uniquely designed to put the Hagglund through its paces in a safe environment.
Take your time over your visit, or you will suffer from sensory overload. Relax, enjoy food from the cafeteria, and browse through the shop. With holidays looming in July, the Centre will have its favourite characters out, such as Pom Pom Penguin, Husky Max and Sammy Seal, and a special deal means two children get in free with one full paying adult, who is a Canterbury resident.

Business behind a good cause Leanne Bachop was diagnosed at the age of 42 with a rare form of cancer called Neuro Endocrine Tumours, which has seen her go through three major surgeries, one in which more than 70 percent of her liver was removed. The next option, Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy, comes with a price tag of $50,000 per treatment for a recommended four treatments. Fundraising this amount is a daunting task, but one of Leanne's friends and family have willingly taken on, including Lindsay Welch and his team from Mike Pero Cashmere and Bishopdale who raised a total of $49,000 at an auction/movie night in June at Reading Cinemas The Palms.

Superheroes on a mission at Chch hospital Was it a bird? Was it a plane? No, it was Batman and Spiderman scaling the walls of Christchurch Hospital ahead of a top secret mission!
T
he international superheroes snuck into the quake hit city recently after answering a Code Red call from Christchurch’s superhero Flatman. A video of the mission has just been released (now that the superheroes are a safe distance from the city). “Canterbury still needs love – and who better to provide it than the world’s best known superheroes?” says Flatman. Flatman, Batman and Spiderman were joined by Iron Man, Mr Incredible, Captain America, Superwoman and the Black Widow in their mission. After abseiling down the side of the hospital, they swarmed five wards surprising the children and families inside. “There are so many people – like these families – in Christchurch who’re going through some really tough times. Our mission was to show how little things can bring joy to people, even when they’re in really stressful situations,” says Flatman. The mission was a hit. Free superhero cupcakes for all (courtesy of The Cupcake Collection), sword fights, bubbles and a whole lot of smiles. The All Right? project (which works to support and improve Cantabrians’ mental health and wellbeing as we recover and rebuild) helped accommodate the superheroes while they were in Christchurch and filmed the mission as part of its Outrageous Burst of All Right series. Manager Sue Turner is delighted with how the mission went. “It really shows how little things can mean a lot to people – even when times are tough for them. We know we can’t solve the myriad of complex issues Cantabrians are facing but we can all do things to brighten their days,” says Sue Turner. Sadly, Sue Turner says the superheroes were unable to rebuild the central city while they were here. They had a good look around though and are sure to be back when the need strikes.

Putting the fans into Fanfare The SCAPE Public Art Trust of Christchurch launched a fundraising initiative at Mashina in The Christchurch Casino to meet the final cost of installing a spectacular Neil Dawson sculpture, Fanfare, at the city’s gateway beside the northern motorway by the end of the year. Fanfare will be New Zealand’s largest public artwork, 24 metres high and weighing 25 tonnes, and featuring
360 wind-powered pinwheels able to be lit up on festive occasions. It was gifted to the CCC by the City of Sydney. All but $360,000 of the $3.3 million needed to install the sculpture has already been raised and the latest initiative is intended to cover the final portion. Michelle Butterfield is the original owner of both salons. She has created a sharp, stylish and contemporary look for the stores with a black, white and grey theme that includes the cutting chairs and the couches for waiting clients, the smart uniforms for the staff and the crisp-looking updated logo. Yet the history and tradition of the brand is not forgotten. Barbers’ poles grace the entrances to the salons, while there are framed cut-throat razors on feature walls and old-style newsprint wallpaper behind the basins. The attractiveness of the surroundings is matched by the expertise and experience of the staff. All the hairdressers are fully qualified stylists and Michelle puts any new applicants through a rigorous practical test to an exacting standard before she will appoint them.

Pre-school children can have their hair cut for $8 while it’s only $13 for primary age children. A man’s dry cut is $20 and a lady’s one just $23 and all our clipper cuts are a snip at only $10.” The salons are busy with five staff cutting at weekends and four or five during the week, but no appointment is necessary. If people do have to wait for a short while, there is a TV tuned to music channels and newspapers and magazines available to keep them occupied. I
t has been a long two decades since I last visited a gym. My memories are of the long walk between rows of treadmills when you entered, and the posturing males in the free-weights room.
The reality of Mint Health and Fitness is thankfully a world away from this experience. A boutique fitness and food facility is how Mint describe themselves, with a focus on whole body wellbeing, including relaxation and nutrition. Based at 31 Birmingham Drive in Middleton, it is an intimate and well set out space, and also home to the very popular Pure Café Company. My taste of Mint was a sample of their Ignition package – half hour sessions in nutrition and work out basics, topped off with a massage and a great coffee. Jane Syme is one of two nutritionists at Mint who provides excellent nutritional advice to clients. Gone are the days of callipers that rudely grabbed at parcels of skin to determine percentage body fat. Now it is as easy as relaxing on the bed while electrodes are placed on your skin and having a few measurements taken, with the resulting Body Impedance Analysis providing statistics on fat
and muscle tone of the body, as well as general cell health and hydration. For many it is a one-off visit with general guidance on healthy eating and portion size, and for others Jane will request blood tests and the use of a food diary to come up with the best nutrition plan for their body. It is a strange new world of weight machines for me out in the gym area. There is a wide range of equipment from the familiar bikes

The end result for me – eat more protein, build a bit more muscle, and a realisation that I may just be ready to try out a gym membership again.

resh food and fabulous flavours will be inspiring kitchen creations at Merivale Mall this month. Entrée is the first ever food festival for the shopping centre, and the first of its scale for the city.

Merivale Mall, in conjunction with Electrolux who have supplied the test kitchen, will be hosting three weeks of food focused entertainment, with many events planned and some of the local eateries in on the action too. All of the events showcased are free of charge - a few of them are limited on numbers so make sure you book your space. Bardello kicked off the food festival on Saturday 5 July with a demonstration on making their delicious stone baked pizzas, and a chance to taste the results. Jax Hamilton, of New Zealand Masterchef fame, will be talking food, recipes, and about her cook books in an evening of fun, held in conjunction with Paper Plus Merivale. Registrations are necessary for this ‘over 18 years’ event. Jax will also be giving a cooking demonstration the following week, looking

achel Legge took over ownership of the Rodney Wayne salon at Westfield Riccarton in September last year - a natural progression after six years of working for Rodney Wayne as a stylist and manager. She likes what Rodney Wayne has to offer for both clients and staff; for clients there is always a special in store – a free shower cap with every two Kérastase products purchased is available at present, and for staff an excellent professional development programme. The salon has 14 team members from a range of countries, and all with great skills and experience. Brahim, originally from Chile, has been working in the salon for four years, and is a specialist in hair and scalp maintenance related to hair loss and hair growth. Adding to the international experience is Sarah from the United Kingdom and Jake from Singapore, while for others such as Mary and Donna, there is over a decade of working for Rodney Wayne, and in the Riccarton salon.
Their clients come from all across the South Island for service which Rachel describes as the “royal treatment.” “We are always building, always growing,” says Rachel of the apprentices that the salon supports. For their many apprentices it is a busy few years of study – working full time while completing their qualifications and gaining the necessary experience. With a veritable feast of talent to choose from, Rachel is able to select the stylist who best fits each individual client, all of which ensures that they receive the best service possible. Their clients come from all across the South Island, from Wanaka, to the West Coast to Oamaru, with their loyal client base choosing to travel to the salon for their haircuts, and for service which Rachel describes as always giving the client the “royal treatment.” Rodney Wayne Riccarton stocks a full range of hair care products including Kérastase, Redken, Pureology and Matrix hair products. They also use only L’Oréal Professionnel colours, and specifically the INOA range of ammonia-free colours. For those who would like to refresh their colour for winter the salon offers a full complimentary consultation, including time and cost of the service. While appointments are recommended, Rachel is never one to disappoint, she says for those who choose a more spontaneous approach they will always be able to find a space in the busy salon.

During the two year period since curiosity got the better of the cattery owners Donna Barlow and Steve Lamont, the pair have made countless improvements to the facility as far as their time and financial resources can stretch. Reality is, cat owners have high expectations for their pets and Ashley Cattery must keep atop of such standards to please not only the owners, but more importantly, the whiskered ones themselves. With the capacity to board up to 80 cats at any one time, Ashley Cattery is a sizeable operation and holidays are in demand, Donna Barlow explains: “Public holidays and school holidays get very busy; we do like to ask people to book well in advance if they want their pet to stay with us over the busy period.” During their stay, cats will be treated to exemplary treatment by Donna and her well versed team which includes two part time vet nurses and five other on-call staff. The superb staff are the lifeblood of the busy cattery and Donna is very appreciative of her professional team. “Without the staff, this place simply could not run. Operating a cattery this size is not quite the lifestyle one would imagine, it takes a lot of hard work and commitment but the staff are a major help and of course we receive so much love back from the cats - that makes it all worthwhile.” The Ashley Cattery Facebook page is currently sat just below an impressive 500 ‘likes’ which is unsurprising considering the nature of the posts (the internet certainly does have a ‘thing’ for cats) which range from tearjerkingly sad to irresistibly adorable. The ever popular ‘cat of the week’ feature is an enviable

In a series of recipes, in preparation for Roast Day, this issue Metropol presents Nici Wickes’ wonderful Dalmatian Inspired Pot Roasted Beef…
RECIPE The flavours in this dish are reminiscent of the famed Dalmatian dish pašticada – pot roasted beef with lots of herbs and spices in a rich, red wine gravy. Served as hot beef rolls, this makes a fantastic shared plate. Wine Match: Selaks Reserve Hawke’s Bay Syrah Prep Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 1 ½ – 2 hours Serves: 6 – 8 Ingredients 1.5 kg bolar or topside beef 2 cups Reserve Hawke’s Bay Merlot Cabernet 3 Tbsp chopped fresh rosemary 4 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced 2 Tbsp olive oil 3 onions, peeled and sliced 3 tomatoes, roughly chopped 8 – 12 baby carrots 1 bay leaf 3 – 4 cloves ½ tsp salt & ¼ tsp pepper ½ cup prunes, pitted Bread rolls to serve

METHOD In a large pot, marinate the beef in one piece for at least an hour (or overnight) in the wine and rosemary. Remove the beef, reserving and setting aside the marinade for the sauce/gravy. Using the tip of a sharp knife, make small holes in the beef and insert garlic slices around the whole piece of meat. Heat the olive oil to medium to high in a cooking pot and brown the beef on all sides. Once browned, add the onions, cook a little and then add the chopped tomatoes and carrots. Add the reserved wine marinade (it should half cover the meat and vegetables); bring to the boil before lowering the heat to a simmer and adding all the remaining ingredients – bay leaf, cloves, salt and pepper – except the prunes. Cover and slow-cook over a low heat for 60 to 75 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding water if needed, to keep the meat half covered and moist. Add the prunes 20 minutes before the end. Remove the beef from the cooking pot and set aside to rest. Place the cooking juices on a medium to high heat and rapidly simmer until it thickens slightly (you can thicken with a little corn flour mixed with water if you wish). Serve the gravy, enriched with the onions, carrots and prunes in a small bowl on the side. Serve the sliced beef in warm bread rolls with shredded iceberg lettuce and lashings of gravy.

Duo Dining Room and Bar Duo is pronounced in Chinese and English in exactly the same way, and means “a lot”. A lot is what you get at this unique spot. Open from 11am until 11pm, seven days, you can enjoy a sumptuous lunch menu, as well as a great selection for dinner and dessert. While the address gives it as 12 Hereford Street, the main entrance is on Rolleston Avenue, and it is very accessible – handy to the Museum, Art Centre, the Botanic Gardens, and within the precincts of the YMCA, and with good parking. The emphasis is on genuine fusion cuisine – a delicious link between local produce and favourite food, and an Asian influence. All home-made, the menu is an absolute delight – one signature dish is Duo Pork Pockets – a bun stuffed with slowed cooked pork, coriander and jalapeno – and a magic mixture of textures and flavours. Pan-fried marinated lamb cutlets with spicy peanut sauce is another. Restaurant manager Sophia Su explains that Duo is multifunctional – catering, intimate dining, a work get-together, or a function in the curtained-off silk room. Ilex Café restaurant The new visitors centre was designed to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Christchurch Botanic Gardens, and is well worth spending time there – along with a coffee or a meal. The building is striking – pavilion-like, which links clean glass panels and plant cell motifs and a pure white décor, with the beauty of the gardens, where it stands near the Avon. The menu is also clean, full of natural foods and flavours, in line with its environment – soups and salad, crudités of local vegetables – raw, pickled or cooked – beetroot cured Akaroa salmon and pumpkin and feta croquettes feature as light options. For mains you can choose hay-smoked local chicken, slow cooked lamb, grilled Canterbury steak sandwich, or select from a sumptuously stocked cabinet. Desserts are available as well as a range of beverages – good Canterbury wines, Bach Espresso Coffee, All Good sparkling juice and Aroha juices. When you are finished, roam the shop, the displays, educate yourself, or just go for a quiet wander outdoors in one of Christchurch’s iconic places.
The Astro Lounge is the casual side to the well-known Cook ’n’ with Gas, at 23 Worcester Boulevard. t’s SoYo, located on the corner of Riccarton Road and Rotherham St – a perfect place for those of us visiting Westfield Mall, or working in the area, to enjoy amazing frozen yoghurt, whether for a lunch snack, a kick start to the day, or a cool refreshing interlude…any time! The concept is stunningly simple, but so innovative it has you wondering why it hasn’t arrived before. All you do is walk in and choose a fill up from a range of frozen yoghurts; chocolate, melon, cookie dough, coconut, and au natural. You then top up from a delightful selection, including: chocolate fish, M&Ms, popping pearls, wafer sticks, kibbled hokey pokey, marshmallow, pineapple, rock melon, chocolate peanuts, grapes, jaffas, sour grapes, bitter balls, sour snakes, waffle cone pieces…you name it, it’s there. There are also a range of sauces to add to your creation. You then weigh and pay – walk out with something you have created yourself, and it is soooo delicious. SoYo continues to develop its range of flavours and toppings. Some favourites include pomegranate, mango, cookies and cream, green apple, white chocolate, with more to come. For those who need dairyfree options, they are there too, including the very popular chocolate flavour.

Christchurch at the moment where the younger crowd can meet with their friends.” Just looking around SoYo on a busy Saturday afternoon certainly lends credence to this idea, but in amongst the teenagers who are thronging to SoYo, are a lot of older faces! Call in and sample if you are in the Westfield Mall area. It is fun; it is different. It is inexpensive as well, and hey…you have to be responsible for the way you cobble things together. urnard is an intriguing fish. Large pectoral (side) fins that open like wings endow the fish with a distinct appearance and give rise to nicknames such as ‘the butterflies of the sea’ and ‘sea robins’. In addition to seeming to fly, gurnard have ‘legs’ flexible spines that have become detached from the pectoral fin over time. These spines give the impression that the fish is walking but are, in fact, used to stir up the sea floor and access the small crustaceans that they feed on. Curiosities aside, gurnard is a deliciously sweet fish with firm, flaky flesh. Fondly called ‘carrots’ by fishers for their colouration, gurnard is an extremely versatile fish which works well with many flavours and styles of cuisine. Soup and stew recipes often call on gurnard for its ability to hold together well, however it is just as delicious pan fired, baked, roasted, poached or barbequed.

Method Season the fish with salt and pepper. Dust with rice flour, dip into egg white mixture and coat in coconut. Set asked in the refrigerator (this will allow the egg white to harden and set, making the crust stick better). Place the cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and mint leaves into a medium-sized bowl and toss together. Dress with lime juice and olive oil and season to taste. Set aside. Place frying-pan onto a medium heat, add the melted butter and pan fry the fish until golden, turning once. Add the lemon halves to the frying pan cut side down, and allow to caramelise alongside the fish. Place a mound of salad onto each of four plates. Place the coconut crusted fish on top of the salad, drizzle with olive oil, and garnish with caramelised lemons.
Ingredients 1kg fresh fish fillets Juice (only) of 5 lemons 3 spring onions, chopped
Method
1 small cucumber, seeds removed, chopped into bite-size pieces
Rinse the fish and cut into cubes Place in a shallow dish and cover with the lemon juice – leave to marinate for at least 2 hours, or overnight in the fridge. Drain off the lemon juice. Add the spring onions, cucumber, tomatoes, pepper, coconut cream and water. Sprinkle with pepper and mix well. Transfer to a serving bowl, cover and chill before serving.

Wines of Canterbury have announced the winner of the Champion Trophy for the 2014 Wine Show. At the David Jackson Dinner in Christchurch recently, the 2013 Waipara Hills Waipara Valley Equinox Riesling was declared the top wine in the 2014 show.

he award was collected by Winemaker Simon McGeorge who was elated to accept the prestigious award. “I’m hugely excited to receive the Champion Wine Trophy, particularly given the strong competition this year,” Simon said. “This wine really shows why Waipara is the home of Riesling in New Zealand. Lifted and perfumed, yet with a depth that keeps you looking for the next character. The palate has weight and richness, but is also vibrantly fresh.” The chairman of the judging panel, wine writer and editor Jo Burzynska noted that “The Waipara Hills Equinox Riesling impressed the judges with the great purity and intensity of its palate,
with its fresh notes of lemon and lime and long mineral finish.” The judges were, Jo Burzynska (Chair), Editor Wine NZ, and Wine Editor for Viva, New Zealand Herald, Kirsten Creasy, Winemaker and Oenologist with Hill Laboratories, and local chef and Restaurateur, Jonny Schwass (Harlequin Public House and Gorilla). Wines of Canterbury Inc, which supports the region's grape growers and winemakers, covers the area bounded by the catchment area of the Waitaki River to that of the Clarence River in the north. Wines must have been made from grapes grown within these boundaries to be entered into the Awards.

Canterbury's best architectural T designs he best architectural designs in the Canterbury/Westland region were announced recently at the regional awards ceremony for the 2014 ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards.
Held annually, these prominent awards celebrate the most innovative, impressive and considered architectural designs in the country. The awards recognise successful design in residential and commercial architecture across a range of categories including new homes, interiors, alterations and additions and industrial design. The regional awards, which are currently being announced across the country, will be followed by the national awards to be held at a gala ceremony in the Bay of Islands on Friday 26 September. This year eight regional awards were given to four winning Canterbury designers. The award winners are Greg Young of Life style Architecture, Jason Walker of WeirWalker Architecture, Chris Wheeler of Hierarchy Ltd and Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 Design. In addition four highly commended awards were announced. The highly commended designers are Jason Walker of WeirWalker Architecture, Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 Design and Chris Wheeler of Hierarchy Ltd. Architectural Designers New Zealand GM, Astrid Andersen, said that each year the quality of the award entries is lifted.
“Entries to the awards have had a steady and impressive improvement, which makes it even harder to select the award winning designs! This year we have had a wonderful panel of experienced judges and this only adds to the quality and standard of the awards. Designers in the Canterbury region have a rare opportunity to contribute greatly to the rebuild of a city and its suburbs. It is wonderful to see the variety in designs and ultimately the way Canterbury designers have embraced this challenge. “As a whole, we are consistently impressed by the creativity and provocativeness of our members. They face the challenges of design head on and come back with amazing concepts that astound and impress,” said Andersen. Judges said that the strongest category across all regions of this year's awards was small to medium homes. The strength of this category
demonstrates the growing popularity of compact, well designed homes that fit within a budget and that prove that affordable homes are able to showcase the best in design.

The apartment complex is situated in Little River and comprises of eight individual silo units, an accessible ground level silo, a high tech energy generating silo, and an on-site waste water treatment facility. All aspects of the SiloStay project are uniquely designed and custom made to create these grain silos with a twist. Judge's comments: This radical proposition is executed with finesse. Industrial materials and details are invested with sophistication. It looks like a fun place to spend a night and to discover the quirky details.

Changing the world… one piece of furniture at a time
A
story book bird house, ballerinas dancing their way along a headboard, and a flock of moustaches floating across a table – it’s the stuff of fairy tales and an insight into the creative mind behind Hibiscus. Kirstee Griffiths’ creations are so much more than just a piece of furniture. Each item comes in to her hands as an old and often battered piece of wooden furniture. Many hours of sanding, painting and working magic with fabric decoupage, transform it into an entirely new modern piece - and one that is also filled with history. A gift of an old family table that had been reinvented with Hawaiian print decoupage was Kirstee’s original inspiration to learn the craft herself. “That moment was fairly pivotal for me as a designer, with the realisation that amazingly bright and bold prints could be used on furniture,” says Kirstee. “It opened up a part of my
creative mind that I hadn't seen in a while.” Over the past two years she has spent hours and hours honing her skills, and working on a wide array of pieces. “I entirely redecorated my own home before embarking on a wider market,” says Kirstee. “So six months behind a sander and bolts of fabric took me fairly close to perfecting the decoupage.” Her line of vintage book birdhouses began when she embarked on a handmade gift year in 2013, and made her first birdhouse as a gift for a friend. It was so loved that Kirstee decided to make more. Often made from past treasured Golden Books, each birdhouse contains seven books and is completely weather proof. “People connect with them as memories of their childhood. I often hear squeals of 'Oh, I used to have that book!’” says Kirstee.
“It opened up a part of my creative mind that I hadn't seen in a while.” -Kirstee Griffiths
Creating her work is so much more than making a piece of furniture for Kirstee. It is part of her life philosophy to battle against consumerism and the resulting ‘throw away’ items that have travelled the world to get here. It is also a message that she is passing on to her children, with her daughter Sailor, aged nine, completing her newly adorned bedroom decoupage by making herself a stool. Originally showing her work at Encraftment in
Christchurch, Kirstee’s furniture and birdhouses are now stocked at Pay It Forward in Mairehau, as well as gracing the shop wall of HAPA in Re:Start Mall, and Revamp Vintage in Merivale, and in Marlborough and Auckland. It was all to do with meeting up again by chance with an old Kiwi acquaintance who now just happens to design and manufacture outdoor furniture in Sweden – the kind of furniture that is perfect for the New Zealand patio, deck, veranda and garden lifestyle. The rest as they say is history. The first container of furniture was sent to Michelle three years ago. Number 11 container has just arrived and is ready for sale. And what wonderful treasures have emerged from that container – traditional-style wicker armchairs reminiscent of the age of Somerset Maugham and of Singapore’s Raffles Hotel, wicker dining chairs in classic and contemporary designs, rattan chairs and side tables, wicker settees and swing seats. The furniture is Scandinavian in design and is made by skilled weavers in Cirebon city, the heart of natural fibre furniture in Indonesia. The furniture makers in this town have been weaving with natural cane since the 1920s and their expertise is renowned. The furniture comes in three different colour ways- sandy beach, teak leaf and natural, while the chair cushions come in four different colours – cream, dark grey, chocolate and beige. These can of course be changed to suit customers’ own tastes and personal environment. Dining tables to go with the dining chairs are not forgotten either – and these are rather special. They are made from plantation teak forests planted in Indonesia by Dutch immigrants and each one is by law individually

Altering a home's style Changing a room’s function
Home improvements and renovations that don't match your home's original style can be a huge mistake. So updating your country home with a super sleek look may not appeal to your target market. Differing styles within a home will make it less appealing for buyers to buy it.

There are two reasons you should take on home improvement projects. You should do them for your own pleasure and in hopes of increasing the resale value of your home. As long as you spend time and money for the first reason, you'll be OK. It's when you do so for the second reason that you may be in for disappointment.
Installing fancy technology Technology is changing fast. Chances are that whatever state of the art gadget you install in your home today, will be obsolete by the time you sell your home. Landscaping ideas for home gardeners Do you have the same dilemma that I have, your home landscaping needs more pizazz in order for your home to have increased street appeal?
Home landscaping will not simply involve sticking plants into your lacklustre front or back garden to make it look green. If you are truly going to have the street appeal that you require you must plan and actually design your landscaping to achieve this desire. You have the option to hire a landscape design engineer to draw up the ultimate landscaping plan. While this really is the ultimate idea, if you are more of a DIY person here are some tips on tackling it yourself: 1. First you will need to clear the overall area that you will be designing and start from scratch. This will provide you a better 'canvas' to work with. 2. Now make a sketch of the overall look that you would like to have included in your landscaping plan or backyard garden. 3. Create a list of plants, trees, and shrubs that you want to plant. The plants that you want to add to your garden or front yard should work well with the climate in your geographic area and you should take into consideration the seasons. You want to have a mixture of plants that bloom at different
times or seasons throughout the year, winter, spring, summer, and autumn. By having a plant that blooms in a very different season you will make your garden have a focal point even when other plant varieties are not in season. 4. Create a plan that encompasses a layered bed. At the back row of your garden plan, have plants that grow tall, so you have a base for your plan. In your design have plants that descend in height to the smallest type of plant in the front. 5. Your plan should have irrigation or sprinkler systems incorporated in the plan
from the start. I actually use the irrigation style of sprinklers in my garden so specific plants are watered and I can control how much water each zone or plant will get. Some plants need more water than other plants. 6. In your initial plan you should include garden patios, furniture, gazebos, perhaps a barbeque area. You add this to your initial plan so you can design the irrigation system to not hit these areas, thus saving water and not damaging outdoor furniture. 7. I absolutely love the calming effect of a waterfall or water feature. These are awesome low cost attractions for your landscaped garden and can add a focal point to your design. You can vary the look of your landscaping plan with these low cost ideas. By following these tips you will save money but it will take advanced planning and a small amount of creativity. Imagine when you look out your window and you see the landscaped lawn and garden that you designed and built yourself, what a great feeling that will be. Or conversely, when your neighbours compliment you on the way your front yard and landscaping turned out, now that is the definition of street appeal.

For many people it still is, but the variety of holiday homes encompasses everything from the humble bach, cottage or bungalow to luxury apartments, mansions and villas. Private rental You may choose to advertise and administer the rental of your holiday home yourself.
